When installing 5th wheel base rails like the Reese Universal Base Rail Installation Kit # RP30035 in your 1998 Chevrolet C/K Series Pickup with 8-foot bed, you will position the rear edge of the rear base rail so that it is 30-15/16-inches from the rear edge of the truck bed. This is noted on page 7 of the linked instructions.
