Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier Recommendation for 2012 Acura MDX w/ Bare Roof
Question:
My 2012 Acura MDX has no manufacture-installed roof racks or rails and we would like to carry 2 kayaks. What kind of system do we need?

To carry kayaks, you'll first need to start with a roof rack. I really like the roof rack systems offered by Rhino-Rack. Their products are very rugged, but reasonably priced. They are also very highly rated by our customers. I'd recommend a Vortex Aero crossbar system, due to the aerodynamic shape of the crossbars which would be much quieter than square or round profiled bars. The Vortex Aero rack would consist of the following parts:
54 Inch Vortex Aero Crossbar in black # RRVA137B-2 or in silver as # RRVA137S-2
Roof Rack Legs, part # RRRLKVA
Vehicle Specific Clamp Kit, part # DK176
Rhino-Rack also offers a carrier that would allow you to easily carry both kayaks, you'd use the # S512 kayak carrier along with the # RRS512X expansion arm that would allow you to carry the second kayak. The # S512 includes straps to secure the kayaks to the carrier, as well as bow/stern tie downs. You might also consider a set of the Malone quick Hood Loops, part # MPG308. The quick loops provide a simple, easy to use attachment point for the bow and stern tie down. They close into your hood or hatch without damaging your vehicle. They give you and easily attach your straps to these loops. If you click the video link, you can see how the quick loops work.
