Beyond the Slopes: Choosing a Roof-Mounted Ski/Snowboard Rack

If you're reading this, you're probably already well aware of the benefits of a roof-mounted ski or snowboard rack. Extra space inside your vehicle, keeping the slush on the outside, and protecting your precious gear are all great reasons to invest in a roof-mounted carrier. So how do you choose the best rack for getting to the slopes? Below, we break down the key factors to consider when choosing a rack for your winter adventures. There are two ways that you can safely transport your skis or snowboards on your vehicle roof. The first is a specially designed rack, which we'll discuss below. You can also use a roof cargo box, which will enclose your gear and keep them safe from the elements. To learn more about cargo boxes, check out our article here.

1) How Many Skis/Snowboards Are You Carrying?

One of the most important factors in choosing a ski or snowboard rack is, well, making sure it can hold all your skis and snowboards. For the most part, the average ski rack can accommodate traditional, shaped, blade-style and fat skis. Depending on the rack, you may need to purchase a riser kit to accommodate gear with tall bindings. Other than that, just make sure to choose a rack that can accommodate all your gear.

2) Roof Compatibility: What's on Your Roof?

Roof Racks: Most ski/snowboard carriers require a roof rack. If you don't have a roof rack, you can use our fitguide to find a custom rack for your vehicle. After that, just select a rack compatible with your crossbar shape (round, square, etc). Most racks will be compatible with most shapes, but it never hurts to double check the product description. Bare Roofs: If you don't have and don't want a roof rack, SeaSucker does provide a vacuum-cup option. That's really all there is to it!
