Parts Needed To Install Brake Controller In 2007 Dodge Dakota

Question:

I have a 2007 Dodge Dakota without the factory trailer wiring. I need to be able to wire it for a trailer with electric brakes. Can you tell me what components I would need, or if it is even possible. I know I need the controller and a connector at the end, but I am not sure of what wiring or other pieces I need in between. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

You can indeed install a brake controller on your Dakota. The installation is not terribly difficult, if you're fairly handy, you shouldn't have any trouble completing the installation. You'll need a brake controller, a functional 4-pole trailer connector and our Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7.

For a controller, I'd recommend a proportional controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. A proportional controller can sense how quickly the tow vehicle is braking, and will send enough voltage to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer stop at the same rate. This leads to safer, more predictable braking that what's provided by time delayed controllers that use the older technology. As you can see by looking over the customer ratings, the P2 is very highly rated by our customers.

To provide a functional 4-pole connector, use part # 118323. The # ETBC7 kit provides an adapter that plugs into the 4-pole, converting it into a 7-pole. In addition to the adapter, the kit contains all the wire, hardware and circuit breakers needed to successfully complete the installation. I'll link you to the installation instructions for the install kit, plus to some helpful FAQ articles and an install video.
