Does Vehicle License Plate Need to Relocated When Using Hitch Cargo Carrier

Question:

I plan to buy the MaxxTow aluminum carrier for my explorer. If the carrier or my cargo cover up my license plate do I need to move the license to the back of the carrier ? Do I need a light for the license? Thanks!

The legality of an obscured rear license plate varies from state to state. If you want to heed the letter of the law, the plate can be relocated to the rear of the cargo carrier.

We sell quite a few cargo carriers, and to be honest, it is really not that much of an issue. You could zip tie the plate to your carrier, or use a bracket with a light like part # LPL55CB (In most states, the rear license plate is required to be lit after dark).

If your vehicle has a trailer connector, you can splice into the running light circuit and ground wire from the connector with a 2 Wire Loop, # 9651P, to make a quick easy disconnect for the license plate light on the carrier.
