5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Install Kit for a 2014 Ram 2500
Question:
Hello We are in the process of buying our first fifth wheel and want to know what the best fifth wheel hitch is for our 2014 Dodge Ram 2500. It does not have the factory install prep kit. What else is needed besides the hitch? Thanks for your help!

I will be happy to make some 5th wheel hitch recommendations for your 2014 Ram 2500. There are a couple of things to consider first. If you have a short bed truck then I recommend a slider hitch. For a long bed truck a fixed hitch will be the way to go.
If your truck is a short bed then I recommend the Demco HiJacker # DM8550034 for an 18K capacity or # DM8550035 for a 21K capacity. Out of the slider hitches we carry I recommend either of these because they offer the most travel, 14 inches, which is critical on a short bed truck for clearance between the truck cab and trailer when turning. And these hitches slide automatically meaning you do not have to get in and out of the truck to activate the sliding mechanism!
For either of these hitches you will need installation kit # DM8552025-71. I have linked a video review of the HiJacker for you. But if the trailer is more than 92 inches wide then a slider will not offer enough travel and you will need a Sidewinder and a fixed hitch instead of a slider. I have linked our informational article on Sidewinders for you.
If you have a long bed truck then you will not need a slider. For this I recommend a cushioned Curt 5th wheel hitch. The cushioning will provide better ride quality. For a 16K we have # C16120, for 20K we have # C16130, and for 24K we have # C16245. I have linked a video review of the 24K model for you.
For any of these Curt hitches you would need installation kit # C16427-204 for your 2014 Ram 2500. I have linked a video showing how the kit installs.
Besides the hitch and installation kit I also recommend adding an in-bed 7-Way trailer connector # 41157. I have linked a video showing an example installation of this kit as well.
The only other thing I recommend is to consult the truck owners manual and/or the Ram truck website for the capacity of your specific configuration.
