In order to determine which cargo boxes will allow you to open the rear hatch of your 2012 Toyota Highlander you will want to take a quick measurement on your vehicle. If you can move your factory crossbars, move the front crossbar as far forward as possible. Then, with the hatch closed, you will want to measure from the center of the front crossbar to the seam where the rear hatch meets the roof. This rear hatch clearance is also known as front clearance.
I have attached a diagram showing the front clearance for several of Thule's roof cargo boxes. Some of the Yakima boxes offer this measurement on their product page, under the Specs section.
The Thule Pulse # TH614, and Thule Force XT Sport # TH6356B all have front clearance measurements between 41-48-1/8 inches, but are slightly smaller boxes. Many of the clearances we have listed for Yakima boxes are either 52 inches or 57 inches.
If you would like to let me know the clearance your Highlander needs in order for the back hatch to open, I will be glad to make a more specific recommendation for you.
