Parts Needed To Install A 7-way Trailer Connector On a 2008 Jeep Patriot
Question:
I have a 2008 Jeep Patriot that I want to use to tow a small camper. I find your web site while searching for wiring options. I like the idea of not having to cut and splice wires. I see that the products listed on the site are all for a 4 Flat connection. Do you have anything for a 7 Round connection that installs in a similar way? Thanks.

First, I recommend checking your owner's manual for your vehicle's maximum gross trailer weight rating. It is important to ensure the trailer you want to tow doesn't weight more than is recommended for your vehicle. Based on my research, the 2008 Jeep Patriot without a tow prep package is rated for a maximum gross trailer weight of 1,000 pounds. With a tow prep package the 2008 Patriot is rated for a max gross trailer weight of 2,000 pounds.
To install a 7-way trailer connector in your 2008 Jeep Patriot, a 4-way flat connector needs to first be installed. The 7-way connector will require additional connections to be made and wires will need to be ran to the vehicle's battery and to a brake controller inside the cab. For the 4-way flat, I recommend the Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118552. I have attached an installation video of this wiring harness on a 2008 Patriot for you.
If the trailer you are planning to tow has electric brakes, you will also need a brake controller and a brake controller installation kit. Our Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controllers # ETBC7 will provide you with a 7-way blade and 4-way flat connector for the rear of your vehicle, as well as all the wiring needed to install a brake controller. I have attached an installation video of the # ETBC7 kit being installed in a 2008 Liberty, and a help article on installing the # ETBC7 kit for you.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885. This proportional brake controller has an automatic-leveling ability, digital display, and performs continuous diagnostic checks. There is not a vehicle specific brake controller wiring pigtail available for the 2008 Patriot, so a universal brake controller pigtail will need to be spliced into your vehicle's wiring. I have attached an installation video of this brake controller in a 2010 Commander, and a help article on installing a brake controller for you.
