Troubleshooting Trailer that Has Locked Up Brakes After Disconnected from Trailer
Question:
2008 Fleetwood Utah popup had the brakes lock up . Disconnected the plug for the trailer from the truck. However, magnets in electric brake were still energized. Believe the breakaway switch to have gone bad. How do I check it ? I know I will have to replace the brakes, they were smoking !!

I attached a help article that details how to test a breakaway system, but basically it sounds like your breakaway switch has gone bad or the pin of it has partially unplugged itself so your system is locking up the brakes. If you cut the wire leading to or from the breakaway switch itself the brakes should release.
For a replacement switch that would fit nearly all systems you would want the # 3802348.
To pick out the correct brake assemblies for your trailer you need to know a few things.
You will want to measure the inner diameter of your hub/drums and the depth of the drums to determine what brake assembly dimensions you need. For example the part # AKEBRK-35R-SAthat you referenced is a 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch thick brake assembly.
You also want to determine what the bolt pattern is of your assembly mounting flange. The standard size is 4 on 4 inch. You also want to determine the axle capacity of your trailer and go with an assembly that has the same rating, the # 40716 has a 3,500 lb capacity.
