Boat Trailer Leaf Spring Recommendation for a 5,000 lb Boat and Old Springs are 26 inches

Question:

Hello, this is a follow up question to the answer that Jameson gave me on the original question: I have already ordered the 6 leaf, 26 in spring for a 4500 lb axle. Now Im wondering if I should send them back? I should have asked the question before ordering, but obviously failed to do that. What will happen if I put those springs I ordered on? Will the suspension be weaker?

Priority one for picking out a leaf spring is matching the weight capacity of it with the trailer's weight capacity. Spring hangers can be moved if needed, but going with too light of a spring would be a bad move.

Since springs flatten out over time you would want a spring that is slightly under your 26 inch length that you measured like the part # e54SR that is 25-1/8 inches long and has a 3,500 lb axle capacity. Based on the dimension and weight of your boat trailer this spring should work well for you.

The closest option we have to that length is the Slipper Springs # SP-161275, which have a 29-1/2" length. These are designed for 8,000 pound axles.

If you are wanting the best spring for your setup then yes, I would return the 4,500 lb springs and then go with the # e54SR that I recommended. You could probably make the springs you ordered work, but it wouldn't be ideal.
