Operation of Proportional Trailer Brake Controller for Varying Trailer Weight
Question:
I am going to be purchasing a trailer with brakes and I have never had a trailer with brakes before. I know I need to buy an electric brake controller but have a question. My trailer will be empty sometimes and other times be carrying up to 2 tons of rock. Do I need to set the brake each time I change the loads on the trailer? How do I do that?

Proportional trailer brake controllers like the excellent Prodigy P2 # 90885 use a sensor to measure the amount of braking force applied by the tow vehicle. They then send a similar proportional amount of braking power to the trailer brakes so that the trailer slows in unison with the tow vehicle. This type of controller is preferred over the time-delay type in most circumstances.
The linked article explains further.
Whether your trailer is loaded or empty a Prodigy P2 will slow it evenly, consistent with your tow vehicle's braking action.
For your 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with factory tow package and a 7-way trailer connector, all you need to install the P2 is the quick-connect wiring adapter # 3016. An installation video is linked for you.
