Trailer Hitch, Wiring, and Bike Carrier for a 2006 Subaru Outback

Question:

I am aware that there is some discussion as to whether a Subaru can hold a hitch that supports a bike carrier that takes three bikes. Ideally, that is what we would like to do, but if not, we would like to choose a hitch that can support two bikes and also be used to tow a small trailer to take our son to college. Any suggestions?

If your 2006 Subaru Outback is NOT a Sport model then you can install a Class III trailer hitch, # 75560, and carry all 3 bikes. Then you could use 3-bike carrier like # S63365 which can tilt. It also fits both 1-1/4 and 2 inch hitches. I have linked a video review for you.

For towing you will need a few more items. I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

For trailer wiring you can use # 118461. I have linked a video showing how the wiring installs for you.

If you do have a Sport model then the only hitch option is # C11497 which is a Class I. The recommended ball mount is # C45521. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring on a Sport model use # C59496.

If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. For a compatible bike rack I recommend the Swagman Trailhead, # S63360.

Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or car go carrier) per their warranty requirements.
