Although many folks use 1/2 ton trucks for fifth wheel towing, I typically recommend a 3/4 or 1 ton truck because of their stronger drivetrains.

There are many factors that will determine if your truck will struggle or not. Is the 8700 lb figure you mentioned the fully loaded and ready to tow weight? Or does that represent the dry weight. Once your household items, gear, water and propane is added, a fifth wheel can weigh several hundred pounds more than its dry weight.

If you'll be towing on relatively flat ground, and you remain under the towing capacity of the vehicle, you shouldn't have too much trouble. However, towing in mountainous or very hot environments could cause the truck to struggle. The closer you are to the towing capacity and the more mountainous the terrain is, the harder your truck will have to work.

There are things you can do to protect your truck. Add an aftermarket transmission cooler. A transmission cooler is inexpensive insurance that will go a long way in protecting your transmission. The Derale # D13504 would be a good choice. I'll link you to some FAQ articles about transmission coolers. I'd also recommend checking your owner's manual, particularly the section on service intervals. If they list a different interval for 'severe service', I'd follow those intervals for oil changes and transmission service.
