Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

Hi I have a 2007 Dodge 1500 4x4, it does not have a hitch, just a hole in the bumper. It is not set up for towing at all. I need to pull a trailer with a compact tractor on it. I would weigh about 8500 lbs. I see on the website the cap for the curtis hitch is 6000 lbs and with WD it is 10000 lbs. The Dodge site says 7000lbs. MY questions is can I tow 8500 lbs with this truck and if so, what would I need. Bear in mind I have nothing atm. Thanks

If Dodge says that the towing capacity for your 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 is 7,000 lbs then that is the heaviest trailer you can tow. A towing setup is only as strong as it's weakest component. If you were to install a hitch with a heavier capacity than what your vehicle has it would not allow you to tow a trailer above the capacity for the vehicle.

If you can find a lighter trailer so that your setup weighs less than the capacity for your vehicle you could install the B and W Hitch part # BWHDRH25211.

Since you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

If you need trailer wiring you would want the Tow Ready Harness part # 119178KIT.
