In order to be able to tow your 1979 Jeep CJ-5, you will need to install base plates which the tow bar will attach to. We do not carry any specific base plates for your Jeep but we may have an option.

I recommend the Blue Ox Universal base plates, part # BX88230. These do not attach to the Jeep frame. They actually attach to the Jeep bumper. They are designed to be bolted to a flat surface on the bumper, so the bumper may need to be modified and reinforced to be able to handle towing.

A tow bar that I recommend to work with the base plates is the Blue Ox Adventurer, part # BX7322. In order for this tow bar to work, the base plates must be spaced 16 to 34 inches apart on center.

You will also need safety cables like part # BX88196.

You will need lighting for your Jeep. If you are not planning on towing your Jeep often, I recommend a magnetic kit like part # RM-2120.

For a more permanent solution for lighting I recommend part # RM-154. I have attached a link to an installation video for this wiring kit you can check out.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.

You will want to check with your dealership to see if your CJ-5 can be flat-towed or if there are restrictions.
