How Do the Rear Camper Tie Downs for a 2004 F-250 Super Duty Install in the Trailer Hitch
Question:
Hi: We talked on Wednesday about the wall thickness and outside dimensions of tubing assemblies for the Tork Lift tie down kits TLF 2011, TLF 3001 and 3001A. Thanks. Im good with the front tie down kit 2011 but I have more questions about the rear kits - #1The tie down inner assembly that slides into the truck hitch end is 2inch OD square tubing. But the truck hitch tubing is 3inch OD with 1/4inch thick wall, so that the inner dimension measures 2and1/2. That leaves an awful lot of slop. Is the clamp / bracket / keeper plate supposed to snug that up so that the tie down tube wont slip out? I also see that the end of the tie down tube is crimped - does that flatten / widen out the tubing? #2 The truck hitch is factory bent so that the end section of the tube angles forward toward the front of the truck, where it is welded to/through the frame. Because the truck hitch tube comes through the frame at an angle, the forward side of the truck tube is flush with the frame. The rearward side projects through the frame, 1and1/4inch to the weld bead, and slightly more to the actual frame. According to video and pictures, you slide the tie-down tube, with the pre-welded bolt facing rearward into the truck hitch tube until the bolt touches the truck tube. Then put the clamp / bracket on the bolt and tighten up the nut and youre good to go! However, even though the drilled hole in the bracket is offset, it still looks as if it is too long, and will keep the tie-down tube from being pushed all the way in. I guess I just dont see what keeps the whole assembly from coming apart - friction between the inner and outer tubing because a bracket is pushing against it? If you can make sense of my questions, youre pretty good. If not, please e-mail me a message and I call instead. Probably should have done that in the first place! : Thanks

The 2-1/2 inch opening is not going to be a problem. The rear tie downs, # TLF3001, come with a sleeve that fits around the outer tube and inside of the open ends of the hitch on the truck. With the sleeve on the width of the outer tube becomes 2-1/2 inches. I pulled # TLF3001 to confirm this. There would be minimal space between the outer tube sleeve and the inner part of the hitch tube.
On the bracket from the center of that bolt that faces rearward to the end of the tube is 6 inches. There is an additional bracket that holds the whole assembly to the truck/hitch. It uses that bolt that sticks out of the outer tube.
