I only used the paper instructions for the torque specs.
I used my wood pellet bags to support the bumper while removing and reinstalling since I was working alone.
The only problem I had was with the muffler being in the way of the carriage bolt. There was no way to get the torque wrench on it unless you moved the muffler. I did the best I could with an open-end wrench and guessed at the torque.
As usual, great product from etrailer. This is my 4th trailer hitch in addition to 2 bracket setups for towing our car behind our Motorhome from etrailer. We bought a new 2022 Subaru Outback and needed a Class III hitch for our bike rack & my utility trailer. This one was cheaper that the Curt unit, but was rated the same and was mounted the same so why pay the extra $ ?
Installation was pretty straight forward and if you have any questions just watch the install video. My only concern was there were NO fishwires included in the kit. I had saved 2 from previous installs so I had that covered. As it turns out you can get away with out them IF you have some long needle nose pliers because contrary to the instructions you simply insert the bolts from the rear opening rather than up through one hole in the frame rail and down into another like some other installs require. Look closely at the picture and you can see what I mean. The holes are cut pretty precisely in the hitch and the 7/16” bolts wouldn’t drop fully down until the other mounting bolts and nuts are tightened down. I did lower the rear muffler some for easier access to the nut on the 7/16” bolt.
When it came time to cut out the bumper cover I measured exactly as shown in the instructions, but found the cover was tight against the driver’s side of the hitch and interfering with the position of the cover. I had to remove the bumper cover and trim off another 1/4” on that side. My recommendation is to measure over 3.75” instead of 3.5” so it clears the receiver. Even if you cut too far you’ll never see it it’s so low and tucked under.
Took me about the time they said, but I was in no hurry. Looks great and far cheaper that the $[XX] for the factory hitch! ??

Itself been a year now & the hitch still works like a charm!
Great quality and having the etrailer install video for the 2023 Outback made the install really straightforward. Our clip types and quantity were slightly different from the video, but that didn't throw anything off. We're really happy with the final fit and really appreciate that it has minimal impact on ground clearance. We'll use this primarily for hauling our mountain and road bikes, and likely for occasionally small camper trailer hauling. Most of all we appreciate all the money we saved purchasing from etrailer and self-installing.
Super solid hitch. Install was straightforward and fits seamless with a tiny trim to the wilderness bumper cover. Tucks up nicely to still give you good clearance. My second one I’ve purchased from etrailer for 2 diff Outback’s. Factory one is way overpriced in my opinion.
Everything arrived in great condition and a lot sooner than I expected. I was even able to install it over the weekend.
I love the way most of the hitch is tucked away, out of sight. Can't wait to tow my boat and get back on the water.
The trailer wiring harness was super easy to install and tuck's away while not in use.
All in all, I am super satisfied with the whole experience. From the high quality of the product, timeliness of delivery, and minimal or low level of effort to stall the whole thing.

This is my third or fourth hitch purchase from etrailer. As I have come to expect, everything about my order was excellent. The order arrived on time as promised and in good condition. I did the install on my 2024 Subaru Outback Touring XT. I Wwould like to compliment the gentleman that created the installation video. It was well detailed and easy to follow his instructions. Subsequently the installation went super smooth. The only time I ran into any difficulty was when I strayed off track, then had to get recentered again. I’m super happy with the hitch and install. I also purchased the wiring module and it was very easy to install again, based on excellent video instructions. I likely saved a few hundred or more dollars by completing the hitch and wiring installation myself. Thanks etrailer!

When I received the package, the hitch had poked holes in the box and the hitch had a big scratch. I was able to sand it a little and add some paint to make it look new. The You Tube video was very helpful in installing. I had some issues having the holes line up, but was able to loosen the bolts and adjust it. Easy installation.
First of all, etrailer is awesome. Prompt shipping and great follow up to ensure everything was good (thanks, Carol). The hitch arrived in perfect condition and installation was a breeze thanks to the video posted by etrailer. One piece of advise for others: ensure you leave all hardware loose until all of the bolts/nuts have been started. Makes the install a lot easier. If you’re in the fence about this hitch just get it.
Finished installing this yesterday on my OBW. I did the job by myself. I’ve done many hitches before but never had to remove the bumper. It wasn’t as scary as I thought. I did break 2 of the push pin clips removing them but not a huge deal. I took my time and also installed the 7 pin wire harness and ran wiring to the engine bay via the undercarriage. All said including a drill bit through the fingernail it took me 5 hours. It looks real good and the hitch itself is no different that Curt or Draw tite.

This hitch is great! Don't just rely on the video (which is great). Depending on which trim package you have there will be a couple more steps. Between the video and the supplied directions the installation was a snap. The wire guide for installing the frame bolts is a must. My kit came with 2 of them which turned out to be a real time saver. The directions for the cut out of the bumper were spot on. One last thing. Use a torque wrench. I thought I had the bolts tight enough, I was really surprised at how much more I tightened them once I put the torque wrench on.
Love hitch, great video on installation only Problem was with carriage bolt muffler blocked easy access to nut but worked it out with a second set of hands
Really nice and heavy duty. Went on my 2022 Outback Wilderness without any problems. They even included some bolt fish wire which made for any easy install. One thing you will need to do for the Wilderness install is drop the mufflers or use a socket angle extension (what I did) to tighten the carriage bolts. Would definitely buy again.
One year of use as a hitch for attaching my bike rack, and it’s been great! A very solid and worthwhile purchase.
Great hitch for my '23 Subaru Outback Wilderness edition. Very low profile, tucked under the rear bumper. Unobtrusive and looks professional. Was able to install myself in just over 2 hours. The fish wires coils are essential to ease installation of the undercarriage bolts. 2 came with my hitch. Glad I spent $3 to buy a spare which I ended up needing (one fish-wire snapped during installation and would have been a pain to re-coil on the bolt threads). Make sure to have a 6-8" socket wrench extender to reach the four rear mounting bolts. Also, deeper sockets are better for the two nuts that mate to the two fairly long mounting bolts on the vehicle. The etrailer installation video is a must watch as a very helpful step by step guide. Definitely recommend this hitch.

The printed instructions are not the best, you need to watch their video and others if you’ve never attempted a hitch install before. This was my first. I watched videos before ordering.
Tips: This took me about 4 hrs total. Started Friday night and finished Saturday morning. It was not warm in the garage.
Spray WD-40 on muffler hanger bushing. The muffler won't drop but will move side to side just enough to tighten the nut on both sides.
Take your time pulling the bumper off!
Do tape like suggested. Don't think oh I'll be careful. Just tape.
The holes when sliding the hitch into the square tube won't line up perfect, don't panic. You may need to tighten the factory bolt to pull it tighter. Just get the carriage bolt through that hole and it will drop perfectly later. I tightened these last.
Pop the inner plastic bumper pin and then pull entire pin out. If you don't, you will break the pin. When reinserting the pins, pull the inner pin out, slide the pin into the holes and push in the inner pin.
2024 Outback Limited XT
The hitch is holding up very well after one year, I love that it's hidden behind the bumper. I use it to attach a Thule bike rack. The installation video is excellent, take your time and everything will be just right. This hitch also came with the fish wire so you don't need to order one separately like I did.
Watching the video made installation so ez. Glad they make it. Hold trouble with ordering product. Called for help and got an awesome customer service rep.( Nicole). Made everything great.
It looks good and should do great with a cargo carrier. Easy to intstall took about 30 Minutes total. Only thing I didn’t do to installation specs was I cut the opening 2 1/4” x 3 1/4” fits snug!
Overall I'm very satisfied with the hitch, although the bolt holes on the two ears that go inside the rear frame didn't align correctly. I had to use a dremel tool to egg shape the holes in my car to get the bolts in. Also I couldn't find the wire spring items on the website that they use in the video to get those bolts into position. Y'all need to adjust the jig.

As with most videos I've watched concerning the installation of aftermarket parts, this was not as smooth as shown. The bolt holes did not align quite perfectly so I had to try to drill the holes slightly larger to make the bolts work. This was hard to do with the tailpipe bracket being so close. It took about a half day to install, and I had to get a long drill bit to accomplish, but it is done. One thing I did not take into consideration is that you must turn off the back up sensor when using my trailer otherwise when I try to back up the brakes lock up.
Hi, thanks for the quick shipment! Pkg arrived a little damaged, which is kind of expected, it’s so heavy but no damage to the hitch. I was afraid the screw packet was missing but thanks to your forethought they were taped to the hitch head. Thanks for the great videos too on the website, I’m excited to install my new hitch.
I installed the hitch on my wife's Outback per y'all video's. Everything went fine until everything was done. The RAB light is on. I researched this reverse auto braking and the only thing I could find is that this light will illuminate if the connector is disconnected AND reattached- nothing on resetting or fixing the issue. I called y'all and the lady had no clue what I was talking about and was caught up on the fact I did not purchase the wiring harness. I don't need the wiring harness. Anyway, I have an appointment with Subaru this afternoon to have them remedy the issue. In hindsight, I would have had Subaru do the install as that would cost what this afternoon will cost.
Best looking hitch for the Outback. It tucks up almost out of sight. Great quality. Receiver is just a bit loose for my ball assembly From the home club store, so I get some rattle.

If the rattle is more then you want, I would say to use an anti-rattle device like part # RSCP.
