Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Roof Rack Installation - 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander

Hi everyone. It's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we'll be taking a look at our Rhino-Rack roof rack system with the 54 inch long vortex Aero crossbars. The Rhino-Rack SRB legs right here on our 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander. So let's say you're taking your Mitsubishi Outlander out on a trip or an adventure, but you wanna carry extra cargo that may not fit inside your vehicle, or you want something to carry a cargo that you don't want inside your vehicle. So it may be muddy items, sandy items, or if you wanna carry accessories like your bike racks, your roof baskets, or your roof boxes, all of those things would need an aftermarket roof rack kind of like this.

So this is custom fit for your Mitsubishi Outlander and allows you to carry more items on top of your roof so you can have more fun when you're out there. So we have a couple options for Mitsubishi Outlander for roof racks. Now your options are slightly limited just because you do have these flush side rails. So you do need a custom fit power to Mount the roof rack to your vehicle. So we'll take a look at this specific Rhino-Rack system.

We have these slightly longer crossbars here, which will give you a little bit more space and a little bit more overhang just to see if this system is right fit for you, your vehicle and whatever you're carrying on top of it. So here we have the SRB towers from Rhino-Rack. Notice how well they clamp to the grooves of your flush side rails. They also have a little clamp in the back which fits perfectly into the mounting points behind those rails. You also have an integrated lock core, which allows you to secure your tower and help prevent theft.

Just make sure to lock that right down. And you also get two keys, which accesses all four towers. So same key for all your towers. Now, before we get into the specs and measurements first, I just wanna say that this is a really sleek looking tower on our Mitsubishi Outlander, especially with the black trim for the rails. Notice how low profile it is and how well it sits on those rails.

This creates an almost factory-look in my opinion, although you do get the overhang, which the factory bars would not give you. So let's take a look at overhang measurement. So I'm gonna measure right here where that lever is to the end cap. So the inside of the end cap, and it sits at about two and a half inches. Some accessories require some overhang past the tower. I personally prefer a little bit more overhang on my SUV's just because I get more bar space and I can carry more cargo. And it's kind of easier to load things onto the roof because then I'm not reaching as far into the roof as I would, if this was further in. So it says these are mounted to specific points on your flush rails. You are kind of limited when it comes to crossbar spread, that's going to be measured from the center of one crossbar to the center of the other end. We have it at about 27 and a half inches apart. These are on the inside holes though. You can move these out a little bit and you will get five extra inches of crossbar spread if you need it. So whatever accessory you have, you'll have to double check the minimum crossbar spread required for those accessories and see if this matches. Now let's get a look at some height measurements or roof clearances. So first it's going to be the clearance from the lower cross bar to the roof. So if you have, let's say clamps, that go around your cross bar, or if you have, let's say skis and snowboards, especially skis with large findings, you'll want to know how much space you have between the crossbar and the roof. So measuring at the lowest point, it sits at about two and a quarter inches of height. Now the height added to the top of our roof because our crossbar is right over here, is going to be about three and five/eighth inches. So these are the Vortex Aero Crossbars that have Vortex strips. So these are the weather strips that are protecting the inside of our crossbar, which is a T channels. And they are especially designed to help reduce wind drag and wind noise. The one downside to these strips though, is that they do have to be cut according to the length of your T-track accessory. So no matter what brand it is, I always prefer the aero style when it comes to the crossbar I wanna use with their towers. Here, we have our Rhino-Rack Aero vortex bar. So the aero in that name is because they are shaped to help reduce wind drag and wind noise. You have the Vortex strip on top, also helping you do that. You also get the modern T-track system that you will see with your more modern crossbars. I highly recommend using accessories that utilize that T-track system, because then you can maximize your crossbar length and use the full 54 inches of your crossbar. And you won't be limited by where your towers are. Now, this does have a weight capacity of 165 pounds. Then when we do talk about weight capacity though, please don't forget to count the roof weight capacity in your considerations. So add up your roof rack weight, add the weight of your accessory, If it's like a, say a roof basket and add the weight of your cargo as well. And if that total does not exceed your actual roof weight capacity, then you should be good to go. What I really like about where they place the fixed mounting points for your rails is that no matter where you have your cross bars, they're not gonna be over the window of your vehicle. Which is really good, because if you do have clamps or cargo, you wanna make sure they don't accidentally make contact with that window. So make sure to remember the roof measurement. I gave four below your crossbar, two your roof. So my personal thoughts about this roof rack system is I really like the 54 inch long cross bars on your Mitsubishi Outlander. I think that the shorter crossbars look good, they look low profile, but this gives you more overhang which is especially useful if you have to reach up, over and into your roof. Something that will also help with that, by the way, is the Moki doorstep, which will give you a little extra height and traction as you load and unload your cargo on your roof. But other than that, the fact that it has integrated locks, both on your towers and kind of a locking system for your crossbars, we have that full aero design. It looks really good on our Outlander. I think that this is a great system. My only downside to it is that we have those Vortex Aero strips, I do recommend picking up a couple of those because as you do cut them to length, you may lose those pieces or need to replace them. So get those along with this roof rack system. We don't really have a better option when it comes to the flush side rails for your Mitsubishi Outlander, so I still think this is the best of the options we do have. The install process is very simple since the SRB legs are custom fit for your vehicle. So all you need are the crossbars, the SRB legs. And then your cross bar should have the end caps on them as well as he Rhino-rack alarm. And don't forget the keys for your legs. So I already installed the back crossbar so we can install the front crossbar together. So first get your legs lined up. If they came locked, you're gonna have to unlock them in order to pop this lever out. And then you're gonna have to look closely just to make sure the mechanism is on the bottom and not inside the tower. Let's take a closer look at that. Notice how as I move the latch, you can see there's movement on the inside. So you wanna get it right where it sits inside your bottom piece. That way you can feed it into the crossbar. And once that's in there, you can then slide it in through that crossword piece. You may have to hold that lever down just to get that through. Since our Mitsubishi Outlander has kind of thicker flush rails, I'm gonna loosen out our clamp to that way, it's where it'll sit right onto our roof. Now that you have both of your towers on your crossbars, very carefully, get up onto your roof and then try to get them in line with your flush side rails. Notice how we have one, two holes in the front, as well as the back. You're gonna want to get your clamp lined up with one of those holes. Once you do have it lined up with the hole on the side rail, you're also gonna try to make sure that your bar itself is evenly distributed on the towers. Measure on each side and try to get it to the same measurement before you tighten down. Once you have everything lined up, you then start tightening them down. My recommendation here is to tighten them down evenly. So I go like, say, 75% tighten down on this side. Then I finish it on that side, go back to here. That way you don't skew it one way to another. And it helps with keeping them all even too. Once you have it tightened down, don't forget to put this back in and then to lock your tower. And also don't forget to lock your end caps too. So those just pop right in and use that Rhino-rack blue key. Do this on all four towers and that's it for the install. And that was a look right here at our Rhino-rack roof rack system, with the 54 inch long vortex Aero crossbars, the Rhino-Rack SRB legs for your flush side rails, right here on our 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander. My name is Evangeline and I hope you enjoyed the journey..

This is the product that was recommended on etrailer as a fit for my BMW X-5, but when doing a search on the SKU I ordered, there’s a message that the product is not a fit. But actually it seemed to fit fine. I think it looks great. I’m concerned it moves a bit on the rail although I have it as tight as I can get it. Hopefully it will be fine. Furthermore, the directions that come with the product really suck. Not that it’s hard to attach, I used the video on the website to get an overview. I was disappointed that the top rubber insert was inside the bar and that information was not made obvious. I learned that by watching another video on YouTube after I ordered them from Rhino. Nonetheless, I’m happy with the purchase. It looks great on my X5 and was more reasonably priced versus the Thule.

by:

By far the best price/ value in a quality rack for the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and etrailer has the best price on the internet. Have a look at the Thule, but I can't imagine that anyone with common sense would choose the Thule over the Rhino rack system. The Thule has far less carrying capacity and costs a lot more.
The Rhino Rack has the highest load carrying capacity among it's competition and is designed to work specifically with the mounting system that is factory stock- i.e., the factory rails on the roof have a 3 position mounting hole system that locates the Rhino rack and also greatly adds to the strength and stability.

I would add that when assembling and mounting them, pay very close attention to two things:
1. As shown in step #1 in the printed instructions, there is a cam that has to be inserted *inside* the cross bar, not under it. It takes some effort and attention to position it properly and ensure that the the cam does go up inside the bar when the foot is slid onto the bar, but you have to, the legs will not clamp to the cross bar if it is not.
2. As shown in step #3, the small pin on the metal plate of the leg has to go firmly and completely into one of the 3 holes on the factory roof rail. When I first did it, it was in a little, but not seated firmly, so the rack was not attached securely to the car, even though it was tightened down all the way. Glad that I looked closely and re-did it correctly. You have to wiggle the plate and pin until you feel it pop into that hole, then hold it there with one hand as you tighten down the lever to secure it with the other. When correctly fastened, the Rhino Rack has no play or looseness- it is attached very firmly.

Also, I have the panoramic sun roof on my Santa Fe, I can confirm that you can open and close the sunroof without any problems with the rack mounted- there is plenty of clearance.
That may change depending on which accessory you attach to the rack. This is a 2015 Santa Fe Sport.

I am doing a renovation on a house I bought recently so I haul a lot of lumber etc from the hardware store. I was concerned when I replaced my Cherokee with the Santa Fe, that I would not be able to carry lumber and sheet goods, but with the Rhino Rack, I can carry everything that I need on top, securely. Seems easy to get on and off, once you installed it the first time and established the position of the legs on the bars. I'll put it on when needed to carry something, then keep it safe and out of the hot sun in the garage when not in use. Probably a good idea to take a label maker and add small tags on each bar in a hidden place to indicate which bar goes front and rear- also left and right for each, so you can re-install with minimal confusion.

I drive an older Audi A6 wagon. This Rhino-Rack product was very easy to install and nice and snug and perfect from day one. It's been a year now and the rack still looks great, no rust anywhere, no looseness anywhere - just a good, solid roof rack. The cross bars have an aero shape and therefore wind noise on the highway is not bad at all. And I like the rubbery strips running along the top of each bar, it's just enough cushion to offer some protection to whatever you're carrying and also those same rubber strips are just grippy enough to keep whatever you're hauling from sliding around as you tie it down. I recommend this rack, I'd buy the same one again. I even put the Rhino-Rack decal in the window. ;)

by:

Attaching the bars to these feet was simple, but I did need to read the instructions carefully. Once the bars were attached, mounting everything to the car was quick and easy. I love the built-in, locking handles that tighten the feet down. My previous rack required a separate tool to tighten the feet to the roof rails; this system is much easier to use. I’ve been using the roof rack for about a year now and it has held up very well.

by:

Pretty easy to install, looks great(at least I think it does). A lot of videos available to watch, probably the best suggestion is to watch them until you’re comfortable with the install process.

by:

Easy to install. The pins on the legs clamp perfectly into the fixed points on the car's flush rails. This is a nice low profile set up. The top of the crossbar is about 4" above the roof glass and does not interfere with opening the sunroof. This is a very sturdy setup for our Thule Motion XT XL. etrailer shipped extremely fast. Very pleased with my purchase.

by:

Fits perfectly. Installation requires focus. Getting that Aero crossbar mounted just right was a little bit tricky because of the metal cam engaging the slot. Once I wrapped my brain around how that was supposed to work, they went on super solid. If you don't get the metal cam in place - it will make it nearly impossible to get this mounted correctly to the flush mounted rail. Read the Q&A - its covered extremely well in there. I do like the lock and key but they are not the best quality. I think if someone wants to take it they could do so with little effort. So far, I'm quite happy overall.

by:

I just installed these onto my 2016 XC90 Inscription. Haven't yet gone for a road trip yet, but they seem solid.
I was concerned that the low profile design wouldn't allow clearance for the sunroof to open, but there is plenty of clearance even with my Thule cargo box mounted with the claw grips.
Installation was pretty straightforward, and adjusting was very simple. They might even be simple enough to install and remove that I keep them in the garage and only install when needed.
I'll definitely update if anything bad happens, but based on what I've seen I don't expect any issues.

by:

Very satisfied with the product and it looks good as does the hitch from entailed (for bike rack) on my Kia niro

by:

A little tough to get on at first but these are great. The installation video was definitely helpful, thank you!

by:

Just bought these for my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport And they look great! I don’t know why someone would pay double the price for the Thules when these look exactly the same. Great product!

by:

Great product! It fits my Ford Edge perfect. I took a 2000 mike trip without any issues. The cross bars look very nice and the price is very competitive. I would recommend these items to anyone looking to save some money with great quality products.

by:

This rack was recommended as an alternative to a more expensive brand. I have used this twice with a luggage pod for 500+ mile destinations. I am very happy to report that I am more than happy with the quality/durability of the product, and the ease of installation/use. Also, it is very quiet. Highly recommend this product. I purchased the locking endcaps as well.

by:

Great product and service. It took me a minute to figure out how to properly connect the legs to the bar, but once I did it was easy to install. Seems sturdy, but haven't put them to use yet.

by:

They have held up to a 51lb eMTB and a fully loaded cargo carrier at speeds I shouldn't be driving at.

by:

2017 Kia Sorento L

by:

So far it was easy to install. The rubber tracks on top of the rack did not cover the entire length of the rack. There were two short pieces. One rack the lengths were inconsistent so not sure what that was all about. Otherwise pretty easy to put together and assemble.

by:

These things are great! I have them on my Land Rover Discovery Sport. They hang on and don't slip around, and they're quiet! I've had roof racks, furniture, lumber, and ladders all piled up there with no worries of slipping. I'd buy another Rhino Rack product in a heartbeat. I'm using these with the black Vortex Aero crossbars. They look good and are super functional. I'm looking forward to years of [ab]use!

by:

Just got the roof racks in the mail yesterday. Super easy to install and it looks great on our Santa Fe! Can't wait to get the kayaks on top.

Also, this is the first time I've bought from etrailer and I will be recommending them to everyone. Customer service was amazing. Thank you!

by:

Good overall. But beware, I thought I had lost one of the rubber clamp covers and tried to get a replacement. The company (Rhino-Rack) does not stock replacement parts in the US. After many calls, they admitted that this is due to their being an Australian company and they don’t have the space in their warehouse for spare parts (direct quote from phone rep)!! Luckily I found the missing part later, but I would have been out of luck if not.

  • Fixed Mount Aero Bar Roof Rack for 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander with Flush Roof Rails
Your photo shows that your 2015 Outlander has the roof setup with flush rails. We do not have a Rola roof rack for this application but we do that others that will work great. For weight capacity, appearance and value I really like the Rhino-Rack SRB Vortex Aero system made of parts # RRVA126B-2 and # RRSX031. This black aerodynamic rack has a 165-lb capacity on your Outlander and provides quieter performance than all other bar shapes. Please check out the linked video to see more. The...
