Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2014 Volvo XC60

Today on our 2014 Volvo XC60 we're going to be test fitting the Rhino Rack Vortex Aero roof rack system. We're using the Rhino Rack Vortex aero bars, part number RRVA126B-2, and the Rhino Rack fit kit, part number RRSX025. Now we've already got our rear bar installed on the Volvo so we're going to finish it up by installing the front one here. To begin our fit we're going to place the rack right up onto the flush-mounted side rails. Actually, let me show you that before we go too far. See here you've got a nice rubber pad. This is going to fit on top of that flush-mounted side rail.

Then you've got two rubber-coated metal tabs; those are going to come in, they're going to squeeze that side rail and secure the bar to our vehicle. Now that you know how it works, let me show you how to put it on. We're just going to place it right up onto the roof line. As you can see, our clamps are open now so we've got one portion in here that's going to grab inside the edge here, and then another portion that's out here that's going to grab this edge. We need to find a fixed point to measure from just to ensure that we have our feet in line with each other. Right up here at the front there's a nice chrome and black intersection where that side rail comes up to the front. I'm going to use that.

I'm going to measure 20-1/2" from that back to the leading edge of my foot pack here. We're going to do that measurement on both sides. This is going to help to ensure that we have our feet sitting in line with one another. There we go. That wasn't quite loose enough so I had to loosen it up a little bit to get those jaws opened up enough to go around the side rail there. With our measurement done on both sides we need to get our overhang even on both sides.

I can tell from here I got a little bit too much over there on the passenger side so I'm going to work it back this way a little bit and then we'll take a look just to be sure it looks equal. Yeah, that looks good. Well, maybe a little more could come this way. Draw it over this way just a little bit. Here on the end we're going to raise up on the u-shaped lever and simply turn it clockwise to tighten it down.

That's going to draw those two sides of that clamp in. Again, one on the inside of that side rail, one on the outside of the side rail. It really gets a very good, firm hold. We'll close that down. We can make our way around to the other side and we'll repeat that same process. There's no need to go back and forth tightening down a little bit at a time. The way these foot packs are designed and built they're going to stay right where you put them. We'll push that down. We've got a nice locking key. The key's numbered 79, 79 there on the lock. Basically we're just going to put that in and turn it, think it's just a quarter turn. Yeah, just a quarter turn. That's going to secure that lock where our crossbars will be safe and will be on the vehicle when we ant to use them. When we install our rear bar you want to do one of two things. You'll either measure from the rear of the front foot pack to the front edge of the rear foot pack, or you can measure from, what I used was the fixed point here. I actually measured 20-1/2" to the rear edge of the foot pack. The reason we do that on both sides is, just like the front, to make sure we have our fit sitting in line with one another. But it also helps to ensure our bars are running parallel. As long as they're parallel it's going to make it very easy when it comes time to mount any accessories down the road. With both of our bars on the Volvo we're ready to hit the road, load up a few accessories, and we can get going. That will complete today's test fit of the Rhino Rack Vortex Aero roof rack system using part numbers RRVA126B-2 and RRSX025. .

I’m so happy I found these. The ordering was easy and was exactly what I expected. Even finding the right version for my car was easy.

by:

Fits well, very sturdy. Works exactly as stated. I would buy these again.

by:

Ordering was simple, the product arrived promptly, and I installed it without difficulty. I'd buy from etrailer again.
One note: the box that the product was shipped in was larger than needed by about 3 fold. It made no difference to me because shipping was free, but it was curious.

Still using it and still happy with it.

by:

I originally purchased a rack from Volvo which, surprisingly, fit poorly and had much wind noise. It was returned and replaced with the Rhino rack which fit perfectly and came with all the necessary inserts to eliminate wind noise...very quiet! Great rack for much less than Thule.

E-trailer shipped on the same day that the order was placed. A good company to deal with in my opinion.

by:

Works perfect with 2012 Volvo XC60 R-Design model and rhino rack aero bars.

by:

I love everything I've purchased from etrailer.
My roof rack still looks amazing.

by:

These worked, but it wasn't as simple as I expected. The video and paper instructions could be clearer. eTrailer reps Wayne and Chris were helpful, patient and courteous

by:

Just assembled and installed them on our 2016 Volvo XC60. Struggled with one of the racks until I realized that the bar had slipped in over vs. under the internal clamping mechanism on the riser. Instructions left something to be desired and probably should have viewed the video.

by:

Website was helpful and well-designed. Ordering and shipping was impressively efficient and quick.
The quality of the product was OK. Quality control seemed a bit lacking. I needed to fiddle with some of the hardware as some of the mechanisms did not line up ( a bit bent). Rubber pieces were loose.

But overall I have used this company twice and I am happy with the experience.

by:

Great roof rails. They sit relatively low to the roof; which combined with the Aero profile give a great look.

by:

Great product, fits our Volvo well. However, the assembly instructions were hard to understand; skip those and just refer to the video.

by:

Easy to install, but getting the clamp tight enough where the legs won't slip takes some extra effort.

This is the product that was recommended on etrailer as a fit for my BMW X-5, but when doing a search on the SKU I ordered, there’s a message that the product is not a fit. But actually it seemed to fit fine. I think it looks great. I’m concerned it moves a bit on the rail although I have it as tight as I can get it. Hopefully it will be fine. Furthermore, the directions that come with the product really suck. Not that it’s hard to attach, I used the video on the website to get an overview. I was disappointed that the top rubber insert was inside the bar and that information was not made obvious. I learned that by watching another video on YouTube after I ordered them from Rhino. Nonetheless, I’m happy with the purchase. It looks great on my X5 and was more reasonably priced versus the Thule.

by:

By far the best price/ value in a quality rack for the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and etrailer has the best price on the internet. Have a look at the Thule, but I can't imagine that anyone with common sense would choose the Thule over the Rhino rack system. The Thule has far less carrying capacity and costs a lot more.
The Rhino Rack has the highest load carrying capacity among it's competition and is designed to work specifically with the mounting system that is factory stock- i.e., the factory rails on the roof have a 3 position mounting hole system that locates the Rhino rack and also greatly adds to the strength and stability.

I would add that when assembling and mounting them, pay very close attention to two things:
1. As shown in step #1 in the printed instructions, there is a cam that has to be inserted *inside* the cross bar, not under it. It takes some effort and attention to position it properly and ensure that the the cam does go up inside the bar when the foot is slid onto the bar, but you have to, the legs will not clamp to the cross bar if it is not.
2. As shown in step #3, the small pin on the metal plate of the leg has to go firmly and completely into one of the 3 holes on the factory roof rail. When I first did it, it was in a little, but not seated firmly, so the rack was not attached securely to the car, even though it was tightened down all the way. Glad that I looked closely and re-did it correctly. You have to wiggle the plate and pin until you feel it pop into that hole, then hold it there with one hand as you tighten down the lever to secure it with the other. When correctly fastened, the Rhino Rack has no play or looseness- it is attached very firmly.

Also, I have the panoramic sun roof on my Santa Fe, I can confirm that you can open and close the sunroof without any problems with the rack mounted- there is plenty of clearance.
That may change depending on which accessory you attach to the rack. This is a 2015 Santa Fe Sport.

I am doing a renovation on a house I bought recently so I haul a lot of lumber etc from the hardware store. I was concerned when I replaced my Cherokee with the Santa Fe, that I would not be able to carry lumber and sheet goods, but with the Rhino Rack, I can carry everything that I need on top, securely. Seems easy to get on and off, once you installed it the first time and established the position of the legs on the bars. I'll put it on when needed to carry something, then keep it safe and out of the hot sun in the garage when not in use. Probably a good idea to take a label maker and add small tags on each bar in a hidden place to indicate which bar goes front and rear- also left and right for each, so you can re-install with minimal confusion.

by:

I drive an older Audi A6 wagon. This Rhino-Rack product was very easy to install and nice and snug and perfect from day one. It's been a year now and the rack still looks great, no rust anywhere, no looseness anywhere - just a good, solid roof rack. The cross bars have an aero shape and therefore wind noise on the highway is not bad at all. And I like the rubbery strips running along the top of each bar, it's just enough cushion to offer some protection to whatever you're carrying and also those same rubber strips are just grippy enough to keep whatever you're hauling from sliding around as you tie it down. I recommend this rack, I'd buy the same one again. I even put the Rhino-Rack decal in the window. ;)

by:

Attaching the bars to these feet was simple, but I did need to read the instructions carefully. Once the bars were attached, mounting everything to the car was quick and easy. I love the built-in, locking handles that tighten the feet down. My previous rack required a separate tool to tighten the feet to the roof rails; this system is much easier to use. I’ve been using the roof rack for about a year now and it has held up very well.

by:

Pretty easy to install, looks great(at least I think it does). A lot of videos available to watch, probably the best suggestion is to watch them until you’re comfortable with the install process.

by:

Easy to install. The pins on the legs clamp perfectly into the fixed points on the car's flush rails. This is a nice low profile set up. The top of the crossbar is about 4" above the roof glass and does not interfere with opening the sunroof. This is a very sturdy setup for our Thule Motion XT XL. etrailer shipped extremely fast. Very pleased with my purchase.

by:

Fits perfectly. Installation requires focus. Getting that Aero crossbar mounted just right was a little bit tricky because of the metal cam engaging the slot. Once I wrapped my brain around how that was supposed to work, they went on super solid. If you don't get the metal cam in place - it will make it nearly impossible to get this mounted correctly to the flush mounted rail. Read the Q&A - its covered extremely well in there. I do like the lock and key but they are not the best quality. I think if someone wants to take it they could do so with little effort. So far, I'm quite happy overall.

by:

I just installed these onto my 2016 XC90 Inscription. Haven't yet gone for a road trip yet, but they seem solid.
I was concerned that the low profile design wouldn't allow clearance for the sunroof to open, but there is plenty of clearance even with my Thule cargo box mounted with the claw grips.
Installation was pretty straightforward, and adjusting was very simple. They might even be simple enough to install and remove that I keep them in the garage and only install when needed.
I'll definitely update if anything bad happens, but based on what I've seen I don't expect any issues.

by:

Very satisfied with the product and it looks good as does the hitch from entailed (for bike rack) on my Kia niro

by:

A little tough to get on at first but these are great. The installation video was definitely helpful, thank you!

by:

Just bought these for my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport And they look great! I don’t know why someone would pay double the price for the Thules when these look exactly the same. Great product!

by:

Great product! It fits my Ford Edge perfect. I took a 2000 mike trip without any issues. The cross bars look very nice and the price is very competitive. I would recommend these items to anyone looking to save some money with great quality products.

  • Can a Roof Bag Be Used with the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag # RL100B90 on a 2011 Volvo XC60
You can definitely use the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag # RL100B90 along with a bag like part # RL100S30 with your 2011 Volvo XC60 as long as you are not exceeding the weight capacity of your roof rack or vehicle (check your owner's manual). These carriers have a combined weight of 20 lbs so you will need to subtract that from your cargo total. A roof rack is required for the Hatch Saddlebag. I recommend going with a Rhino-Rack option like part # RRVA126S-2 (silver) or # RRVA126B-2...

  • Roof Rack And Canoe Carrier Options For 2016 Volvo XC60 With Flush Roof Rails
For your 2016 Volvo XC60 with flush rails, the Rhino-Rack Aero crossbars would be an excellent. You can go with crossbars # RRVA126B-2 and then you also need Feet # RRSX025. For a canoe carrier, I think the Lockrack Adjustable XL Watersport Carrier # LR54FR would work well. The carrier arms can be adjusted from 28" to 47-1/2" wide to accommodate various sizes of canoes or kayaks. A more budget friendly carrier would be the Malone Canoe Carrier with Tie-Downs - Foam Block Style - 6" Long...

  • Will the Rhino-Rack Ski Carrier Part # RR576 Fit a 2017 Volvo XC60
If your 2017 Volvo XC60 came with factory crossbars then as long as they are not more than 3-1/8" wide the Rhino-Rack Ski and Snowboard Carrier part # RR576 will work for you. The Rhino-Rack Carrier can hold up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards. It has locks for security and comes with 2 keys. The soft rubber molding inside the carrier ensures excellent grip on your gear without scratching. If your XC60 did not come with factory crossbars then you will also need to use the Rhino-Rack...

  • Does Rhino Rack Roof Rack for 2018 Volvo V60 Fit Saris Roof Rack Accessories
Thankfully the top channel dimensions between roof rack companies is essentially the same so the channel-mount accessories easily fit between brands. So the Rhino Rack roof rack that fits your 2018 Volvo V60 with roof rails part numbers # RRVA126B-2 and # RRSX025 would fit and work great with your accessories and vehicle.

  • Roof Rack Compatible With The Thule Hullavator And My 2017 Volvo XC60
If you're wanting to use the Thule Hullavator # TH898 then you need a crossbar that will have between 4 and 8 inches of overhang beyond the feet. 48 inch crossbars would only leave about an inch or so on each side, so I recommend getting a 59" crossbar like this one # RRVA150B-2 and then the SRB legs # RRSX025 will fit on your flush side rails on your 2017 Volvo XC60.

You can install the Thule roof rack basket part # TH859XT on your 2016 Volvo XC60 that has roof rails that run front to back, but you will first need to install a set of crossbars on those rails. The Rhino Rack roof rack part # RRVA126B-2 and # RRSX025 would be perfect for this. This rack is a high quality rack that doesn't break the bank like some of the other brand racks.

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for 2011 Volvo XC60 with Factory Side Rails
I do have a solution for you, however the Rhino Rack 2500 Series Rack you mentioned in your question is designed to mount onto naked roofs (without factory side rails) so it will not work on your 2011 Volvo XC60. If you want to stay with Rhino Rack, I recommend the Rhino Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack, which consists of two 49" Aero Crossbars # RRVA126B-2 and the SRB Legs that will mount to the flush factory side rails on your Volvo, part # RRSX025.
