Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Got it quick; installation was a cinch. I'm very glad I didn't go with patching in the bargain version I'd originally planned. Highly recommended!

The hitch and wiring harness were delivered quickly to me, in excellent condition. I am thoroughly impressed with everything, quality, additional installation tools, videos and heck, even how the hitch was packaged. Etrailer.com definitely has my future business, and I'm pleased and thrilled to recommend them to you. Have fun everyone, and as always be safe!

1998 jeep cherokee, plug and play just anchor the ground wire. Can't be any simpler. Thank you

Arrived with the hitch in two days to Indiana, Dec 23rd at that.

This wiring harness was the way to go, I only had to pull off one side panel where the spare is located. I plugged it in and right below was a rubber knock out to fish the 4 connector through.

The trailer wiring on my Jeep Cherokee is performing flawlessly. Great Product

Product connected easily and worked as it should for my '99 Jeep XJ.
The trailer lights were not working consistently so I had to install a new flasher in the XJ (6 light flasher) and changed the trailer lights to LEDs. After this change I had no issues.

Product is still working. Needed to upgrade trailer lights to LEDs to resolve issues.

Awesome product. No fuss wiring. Worked like a charm. Used to on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee to haul my home built camping trailer. I tried to do my own hack job wiring from auto parts store but it didn't work that well. Blew fuse to my turn signals. Will recommend to others.

Thank you for the follow-up. It still works great. I highly recommend it.

1997 Jeep Cherokee

I installed one of these two years ago on my 97 Jeep Cherokee XJ and used it with a light trailer that only had brake/tail and blinkers. The installation is pretty simple as far as the init goes. Ground and connect the connectors with your vehicles factory wiring.

After I used the wiring harness for about 1 year the lights stopped working on the trailer and after doing some investigation, I learned the wiring harness had failed. A rep from E trailer said this occasionally happens if the trailer wiring has a short or other problem.

I ended up re-wiring my trailer from tongue to lights and had to buy a new wiring harness for my Jeep. Admittedly, this failure was my fault, but be sure your trailer wiring is in good shape.

Worked fine and quick install. However, would be nice to have a mounting bracket for the trailer plug to be able to have a permanent mount.

There are a couple mounting bracket options. If you would like there is the 4-way bracket only and that is part # 18144, and it can be used in conjunction with the no drill bracket # 18140.

I am very pleased with the Curt trailer harness. It is simple plug and play with no splicing. I was having trouble with my old harness and Cathy explained to me that my Jeep used a separate lamp for stop and turn indicator while trailers use a common lamp for stop and turn and a converter that is factory wired in the harness was needed. After her explanation, I knew my problem was solved and when the harness arrived, it did solve the problem. I am 75 years old and have been fixing things for 60 years. Having a customer service person who actually knows her product like Cathy does has almost become a thing of the past.

1999 Jeep Cherokee

Great business to buy from. I ordered a trailer light wiring harness for my jeep in the evening recently, and by about 5 am the following morning it shipped. The price was great, in fact cheaper than what I saw elsewhere. I also had a question about a problem with my trailer lights that I asked them and got a detailed responsored in less than 24 hours. I will definitely be a repeat customer.

by:

Very easy to install. Had to work out the routing of the wires from inside the vehicle to the trailer hitch. Has been working well since installation.

by:
1999 Geo Metro

The product fits perfectly. It installs well and quite easily with only a screwdriver needed to access my 1999 Jeep Cherokee's (XJ) wiring. There is ample wire length for the use of connecting to a trailer tongue. This is far superior and worth the investment over universal options that require splicing or pinching into the stock wiring. I use a home-installed Curt hidden hitch as well, with which I have been very satisfied for its function, look, fit, and ease of installation.
The standard shipping method worked well for me, living in a large metro area. The product arrived sooner than anticipated.

by:

The wiring harness was plug and play. No wire cutting or splicing. More than enough length. Easy installation with the help of the detailed instructions.

by:
2000 Jeep Cherokee

Install was so quick and easy, I didn't think to take pictures. Spent more time removing screws in the panels and spare tire bracket than i did clipping the harness in. If you can change your oil you can do it. If you've never changed oil, you can probably still do it.

The "Curt" class III hitch and t-connect wiring harness arrived promptly to my address

This product couldn't have been easier to install in my '01 Cherokee. The instructions were clear and the harness seems well built. I expect it to last a long time. Shipping and communication from etrailer were great.

The harness arived nicely packaged, the instructions where clear and the installation was very easy, this harness saved me from having to strip and re run wires. A friend of mine has the same model jeep and I told to order the same product, definitely going to recommend the product and website to everyone and anyone.

  • 4-Way Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 1997 Jeep Cherokee
Actually to install a 4-way in your 1997 Jeep Cherokee you wouldn't be able to just hardwire a 4-way straight to the wiring since your vehicle has separate turn signals. You would have to use a converter box to convert the signal. The easiest option would be to install the Curt harness part # C55354 as it is custom fit for your vehicle and would work very well.

  • Troubleshooting Utility Trailer Taillights Stop/Turn Signals Not Functioning
It sounds like the problem is the trailer's wiring. I know it may seem like it is working correctly since you powered it with a 12 volt battery and it appeared to work like it should, but what is most likely the problem is either from having a weak ground on your trailer wiring or the trailer lights are drawing more power than the trailer wiring is rated for. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another...

  • Can the Converter Box of a Trailer Wiring Harness Short Out
Converter boxes for trailer wiring can become internally damaged if they end up getting shorted out. What you will want to do is test the wires going into the box of the converter box for voltage with a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 to see if there is voltage going into the box when the taillight functions of your vehicle are applied, and then test the output side of the box to see if the current is making it through the converter. If not then the problem is that the converter box...

  • Connectors on Curt Trailer Wiring Harness Do Not Match Connectors on 1998 Jeep Cherokee
It is possible that the connectors that wiring harness # C55354 plugs into are located on the passenger's side instead of the driver's side like the instructions say. Also, make sure you are looking at the right set of connectors. I have linked a video showing installation of another harness that fits your 1998 Jeep Cherokee but that installs the same way. If the connectors shown in the video are not the ones you have on your Jeep then the only option left is to hardwire in a 4-Way using...

  • Diagnosing and Repairing Intermittent Lighting Problem on Small Utility Trailer
Good job testing the trailer connector on the Jeep, that is indeed the correct place to start. Typically, the goofier and more intermittent the lighting problem, the more likely it's a ground problem of some sort. The first step would be to ensure that the trailer connector on the vehicle and the trailer isn't damaged or corroded in any way. Clean or replace as necessary. Next, check where the ground wire from your trailer connector attaches to the trailer frame. This can usually be found...

  • Diagnosing Intermittent Trailer Wiring Taillight Functions on Trailer Towed by a 2000 Jeep Wrangler
It sounds like your trailer does not have sufficient grounds. The white wire coming from the trailer connector needs to be securely grounded to clean metal on the trailer frame. One other place to check is the mounting points for each of the lamps on the trailer. They receive their ground connection from their physical attachment to the trailer frame. If these connection points are not tight or if they are corroded, you will not get good ground continuity which would certainly cause the...

  • Turn Signal Fuse Blows and Headlights Dim with Turn Signals On
Generally speaking, when a trailer light fuse blows when the trailer is plugged in that is because of a short in that circuit. However, when a light becomes dim while another light is on that is a sign of a bad ground. Therefore, I believe you have a few issues on your trailer that will need to be looked into. If you have access to a different tow vehicle then you can determine which side the fault is on, trailer or vehicle. If not then you really just need to start tracing wires and checking...
