Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Mounted it low on the dah, it’s a great controller

by:
2007 Chevrolet Silverado

It was exactly a plug and play option for my 2007 Silverado 2500HD Classic. The harness worked flawlessly with the brake controller and has been perfect for many trips so far.

Instructions were simple and straight forward. Unit is very responsive and simple to use. The prefabricated chord was nice but wished it were longer for more mounting options. Still very happy with the product and its performance.

I ordered this brake controller about a week ago and received it today (4-18-20).
Im always working on things and my old lady gets bored, so today was sort of our day! Well i decided id make a bet, 20 bucks i can have it installed in 15 minutes!! She agreed and the race was on!! I ran out, grabbed my drill, a small drill bit, a hex head bit, and got to work! I opted for the removable bracket for worry somebody may break in and steal it.
It marked two holes, drilled them with a very small bit, and then screwed the proveded screws in, i then popped the brake controller in, ran the wiring ( sepratly provided
by etrailer.com, for my specific vehicle, a 2004 gmc yukon)above everything to the plug box under the dash, plugged it in, put the cover back on, and wallah!! 15 minutes exactly!

This thing looks great, works great, and is priced great!

I know this isn’t a pic of the item, BUT it wouldn’t have been possible without. Plug and Play. I bought this because we bought a trailer from a dealer and they required the truck to have trailer brakes. This plugs in under dash, if your truck has 7 pin. I did it without checking to make sure it was activated. Went to dealer, 130 miles away and 4000 feet in elevation to pu trailer. As I was pulling out and first hit brakes the trailer locked up. (There is an adjustment device, that purchased separately, or in a kit pugs into wiring harness that plugs into truck to activate trailer brakes). So I adjusted it and everything worked beautifully. Oh my gosh I have pulled trailers for years but never a TT. Tons of car trailers but never with brakes. Brakes are awesome when going over passes of 5k elevation.

THIS COMPANY ROCKS. The only issues I have had with this company is my own ordering fault. I have used them for years and indirect people to them.

THANK YOU.

Great product was almost to easy to install spend a little and get the prodigy 3 you will not be sorry.

by:

Easy install, just plug it in, use the 2 self tapping screws for the mounting bracket, mount the controller with 2 screws, a couple of tie straps, DONE Instructions for use very clear.

by:

Plug and play, worked like it should.

by:

the wiring adapter was good length to reach from the wiring terminal under the dash to the top of the dash where I mounted my brake controller.

Made the install on a 2003 Yukon SLT very easy and quick, no wiring to mess with. Plug and play - worth the money!

No problems. Works great.

by:

Plugs for both ends fit just right. Using this adapter eliminated having to splice the cord from the Brake Control Unit to the GM supplied plug you get with the Trailering Package. Much more professional.
The only improvement would be to make it at least 6" longer. I placed the unit under the dash near the center of the dash and the cable just made it.

by:

Harness worked perfect for my controller

by:

Great Customer Service, great product!!

by:

Worked as expected.

by:

Easy to install. If there wants an improvement I would make it a little longer to provide more options for locating the controller.

by:

Quick shipping and good support with instructional video.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Was looking at another system and the website recommended another one (which is the one I bought) and included the additional wiring harness to plug directly into my vehicle. No wiring, just plug and play. One of the easiest and best setups I've ever done! Thank you for your help.

Still loving it! It fit perfectly in both my 2003 suburban and Silverado. It gives me such piece of mind when I am towing my camper.

by:

Concerning this wire adapter, I was pleasantly impressed that the wiring was covered in a black wiring loom, very professional looking. With this wiring adapter it makes it extremely easy to connect it to the trucks built in trailer plug as well to the brake controller.

  • Trailer Brake Wiring Connections Under Hood of 2003 Silverado 1500
You can refer to the linked help article for details on the wiring under the hood of your 2003 Silverado that you need to connect for trailer brake controller installation. There are both red and blue wires, as you noted. These are normally located next to the fuse block on the cab side as shown in the photo taken from the article. There is one wire of each color. If you have a factory 7-way you will need a wiring adapter to plug the controller in to the port under the dash. For instance...

  • Recommendation for Simple, Inexpensive Brake Controller for a 2003 GMC Sierra
For your application I recommend the Draw-Tite Activator IV # 5504 which will install in your 2003 GMC Sierra with the Adapter # 3015-P. The Activator IV is a cost-effective time delayed controller that comes with a limited lifetime warranty and only has 4 buttons plus the manual slide for manually applying the trailer brakes. All of this basically means that this is a simple inexpensive controller like what you're looking for. Attached is a sample installation video that you can check...

Before you decide if you want a brake controller or not you should check with your local laws and regulations to determine what towing setups are required to have trailer brakes activated by a brake controller. Some states require trailer brakes and a brake controller on any vehicle that is towing a trailer. It may not seem like your trailer would weigh much, but in an emergency situation where you need to stop abruptly inches do matter. Not trying to sound too dramatic, but it is the...

I have attached a video that will show you all the wiring inside the under hood fuse panel. There is a blue wire that may not be completely connected which would cause an issue like you are having. It is a good time to check that the other 2 red wires are also installed on the mounting studs as well....

The PL error code on your brake controller indicates that power to the unit has been interrupted. I would check several things to determine what the problem is. Some of this may seem redundant since you have done a lot of troubleshooting already.
