Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear threshold plate and felt trunk liner behind the tail lights to access the harness.

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Review of Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 118793

Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. And today we're going to be taking a look at the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector. This is going to be a fit for the 2018 through 2019 Kia Rio sedan. So this is going to give you your four pole functions at the back of your Rio.So this is going to be the pretty basic functions for any kind of trailer wiring. Get the cap removed.

This helps to keep it protected from any kind of dirt, dust, debris, or water. To make sure that your connections don't corrode prematurely. So it's bare terminal here. That's our ground connection. And then we'll also have our passenger side stop and turn lights, our driver's side stop and turn lights, and then our running light signal.

So it gives us those four signals. Four pole wiring, that's where it gets its name. So this is going to be pretty basic for just about anything out there. So you can have your brake functions and your turn signals and your running light signals so that everybody knows what's going on around you.You can also adapt this to work with other wiring. So if you've got a five pole, six pole, seven pole, you can buy adapters to work with those as well.

They are sold separately. You can find a lot of options here at etrailer.com, if you want to check those out.And basically this is just going to run up to our converter box and this is going to help protect everything. It keeps your battery from overloading the vehicle's electrical system. So we don't have to worry about any issues on our trailer side effecting our Kia and vice versa. It also comes with a fuse holder to go in between our power connection.

So this does have standalone power. We're not draining anything from our Kia's lighting system. We'll have our bulk wire to connect to one end of this. And then the other end of this is going go to our fuse holder and this in turn goes to the positive side of our battery. It also comes with a ring terminal and two butt connectors to make all those connections. Now one thing I would say with these, if any of these connections happen to be outside the vehicle or even underneath the hood, it's not a bad idea to switch these butt connectors out for heat shrink butt connectors. Since those are going to provide a waterproof connection or a watertight seal. It's not required, but it's just something that I would switch out if it we're my vehicle. Especially if this ends up going outside the vehicle. But if it's going to all be inside, you're probably fine with just these butt connectors that come with it.We also have to make our ground connection and then our wiring going into our tail lights. This is going to go on our driver's side, the yellow and brown wires. And then our red and green and go on our passenger side.So the nice thing about these is that we're not going to have to make any kind of cuts or splices into our Kia's electrical system. The plugs should just match up directly to your factory wiring behind your tail lights. So you'll find those. Get into your trunk, pull the carpet back, might have a couple fasteners to undo, maybe the rear threshold will pop up to get that carpet all rolled back. But then once you're there you'll just remove the connection to the back of the taillight housing. Pop this guy in one side and this will go to the other side of your wiring so it should continue that connection there. So there's no change to our Kia's normal lighting functions when we're going down the road. Normally it's not going to change anything, but now we'll have this extra connection going out to our four pole.So we don't have to worry about it affecting our vehicle at all. We're not going to avoid any warranties. It's just going to give us that four pole function to connect to any of our other accessories. The install is pretty straightforward. Definitely something that you can do at home, in your garage, in your driveway, within the span of an afternoon, easy. So definitely something you can do yourself. You don't need to have this taken into a shop to do.It comes with some double sided tape to attach your module box. Just want to make sure that you mount this somewhere secure so that it's not going to be bouncing around. Although there's padding material inside there. Tekonsha does a really good job of making sure that this is protected, so it's not going to have too much issue with any kind of failure. When you're on the road, a lot of people don't think about it, but everything's kind of vibrating a little bit and sometimes they can shake things loose and the connections inside there can get loose. But since it has that padding material, it keeps everything nice and secure and tight. And it also keeps out any debris or water from getting in there and causing issues. We'll also get a handful of zip ties to make sure all our wiring is nice and secure. You definitely want to use that whenever you're running your Volk wire. You don't want any wires hanging down. Put the risk of getting caught on anything, like your driveshaft. Don't want to get caught on any rocks, so make sure that you pull that wiring tight. Just keep it away from anything hot or moving like your exhaust or your suspension. And use those zip ties to keep it anchored down.So definitely an easy way to get that wiring on your vehicle. Comes with instructions to help you find all your connections and get that wired up correctly. As far as the specs with this, we're going to have a maximum amperage for our stop and turn lights of five amps per circuit. And for our tail lights, it's going to be 7.5 amps per circuit. Has a one year limited warranty from Tekonsha. And again, we're not going to have to worry about any back feed from our trailer to our Kia and vice versa. Fuse protected as well, so there shouldn't be any issues that arise. That's going do it for our look at the Tekonsha vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector.
