Expert Answers about Tow Straps and Recovery Straps

  • Does Bulldog Winch Heavy-Duty Recovery Strap BDW20030 Stretch
  • I checked with Bulldog Winch and their 30-foot strap # BDW20030 has less than 5% stretch so they consider it a "no stretch" strap. I do understand the distinction you're making but we use the same "recovery strap" terminology that Bulldog Winch uses for this item. Many of our "tow straps" like # H10175 include hooks.

  • Erickson Recovery Tow Strap # EM59801 Recommendation for Towing a Silverado 2500 Diesel
  • The strongest recovery strap is our Erickson Recovery Tow Strap # EM59801. This strap has a break strength of 35,000 lbs and can be used on vehicles that weigh up 17,500 lbs. I would recommend you put two Erickson Bolt-On Tow Hook with Keeper # EM59505 on the front of your 2500 Silverado and then run one end of the # TR63046 through the loop on the other end of the strap so that you have a slip knot that you could put around both of the tow hooks to spread the weight of towing your vehicle...

  • What is the Difference Between a Tow/Recovery Strap and a Snatch Strap
  • The difference between the recovery and tow straps has to do with how the manufacturer designed it. Some of them have hooks instead of loops for the vehicles, some of them are retractable, and some of them use more chain than material. I have attached a link to our selection of straps that you can filter through to choose the best one for your towing needs. You will want to choose a strap that has the correct length and weight capacity for what you are trying to tow. Although some of the...

  • Recommended Vehicle Recovery Strap And Receiver-Mounted Shackle
  • The ring on the Trailer Hitch Receiver Mounted Forged Tow Eye # TR63045 is approximately 1" thick. The Bulldog Winch 3/4" Bow Shackle # BDW20020 has an opening of about 1-1/4". This will work, but it will be a tight fit. I recommend going with the Bulldog Winch Bow Shackle # BDW20117. This has an opening of 1-3/4" which will be plenty to fit the Trailer Hitch Receiver Mounted Forged Tow Eye # TR63045. You can then use tow strap such as Erickson Recovery Strap # EM59600. The Bulldog Shackle...

  • Can a Trailer Hitch be Used as a Recovery Point for a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Yes, you could use Curt trailer hitch # C13065 as a recovery point to get unstuck when doing a little off-roading or muddin'. You could tie off to the safety cable loops on the hitch or what I recommend is to use tow strap loop, # TR63046, since it offers a larger area on which to attach a strap. And if you are in need of a tow strap, now or in the future, I recommend # IMF100014. I have included a link to a video showing installation of the hitch for you.

  • The loops that are attached to the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 31408 can be used for vehicle recovery according to my contact at Curt. However, if you will be pulling anything toward the 9,000 lb line pull capacity of the hitch then I recommend using a tow strap mount that attaches to the receiver tube opening like part # TR63046. I have attached a review video of the tow strap mount in use for you as well.

  • I do have some strap options for you but we unfortunately don't offer any domestically made straps. That said, I own and use the Erickson Tow Strap with Reinforced Loop Ends part # EM59704 and it has never let me down. • What To Do with Damaged Recovery Tow Strap
  • Most people will say that if you damage a tow strap you really just need to replace the entire thing as it was obviously stressed to the point of failure and would likely fail again if fixed. I would not recommend attempting to repair what looks like a tow strap that's seen quite a bit of stress. Instead I'd recommend replacing it with a strap like our Erickson Recovery Strap w/ Reinforced Loop Ends # EM59808 which has a 62,500 lb capacity.
