Fifth wheel towing is not supposed to be done with the truck's tailgate down. This would cause clearance issues between the trailer and the tailgate which would damage the tailgate pretty quickly around corners. Normally you would lower the tailgate to back up and connect to the fifth wheel hitch and then you would raise the tailgate after.

The replacement tailgates like the # VGD-94-101 install pretty easily. Basically you would just need to remove your current tailgate. What you would need to do is lower the tailgate to about a 45 degree angle so that you can lift the tailgate off of the hinge that has a section removed from it and then you will be able to pull the other side of the tailgate off when that side is out.

The great thing about fifth wheel tailgates like the Stromberg Carlson 100 Series 5th Wheel Tailgate # VGD-94-101 is that they are designed to allow you to be able to back up to a fifth wheel trailer without having to lower the tailgate. I would still recommend you approach the trailer with a bit more caution with the tailgate up and be sure to head straight back to it to prevent you from hitting the sides. The Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock part # PAL8250 is a manual to power tailgate lock conversion kit. I am not sure I would say that this product will make your tailgate more secure as it is more of a convenience feature because it lets you use your key fob to lock and unlock the tailgate.

I definitely recommend getting a 5th-wheel tailgate on your 2017 Ford F-250. The reason is because a tailgate light the Stromberg Carlson 100 Series # VG-15-100 is the only assured way to protect your factory tailgate when transporting your 5th-wheel trailer. In 2010 Ram changed the rear of the trucks enough that they had to redesign the tailgate. So a 2005 tailgate would not fit on a 2012 Ram 1500. So you'd need a newer style tailgate to fit the 2012 like the Stromberg part # VGD-10-4000 which is a confrimed fit for a 5th wheel style tailgate. view full answer...
