When the BAKFlip G2 Hard Tonneau Cover, part # BAK26407 is installed it will be secured in place with latches attached to the underside of the Tonneau cover near the tailgate.
If you do not have a locking tailgate, the Tonneau cover will not lock it in place. The tailgate will still operate that same. You do need to lower the tailgate to reach the tabs you pull to release the cover and allow it to be folded. Yes, the release handle for the Lomax Hard Tonneau Cover part # LOM54FR can only be accessed from inside the truck bed so you'll need to have the tailgate open for this to happen. With a 6-1/2' bed you should be able to leave your tailgate on and just open it when coupling up to the trailer. That being said you can measure from the center of the king pin to the back of the pin box and then take that measurement to your bed and place the end of the tape measure above the axle and lay it towards the tailgate to see how close it comes to it to confirm.

I have contacted Gate King and in between each position the tailgate will move at a 22 degree angle. So what this means is if you were to open the tailgate flat, raise it to the first locked position the tailgate will be at a 22 degree angle.
