From what I understand about snowmobiles, and please correct me if I am wrong because I have little knowledge on them, the carbides are the part the skis attach to. Is that correct? I am not sure how the E-track or the carbides would come into contact with each other. But if they did then it would be possible for one to scratch the other.

That's a good question and we have had a number of people wanting to do the same thing, but e-track does need to be mounted parallel to your UTV, in the direction of travel. Wheel straps pulling to the side, opposite the direction of travel, can put undue stress on the straps with what is essentially a moving load.
So what you will want is horizontal e-track with wheel straps:

The storage hooks like parts # ETJR, # ETJS, # EM59142 or # EM59141 all mount in a vertical E-track slot. If you wanted to run the E-track horizontally, you'd use the standard E-track like # E19148. My contact at Erickson confirmed that you are definitely able to use the Vertical E-Track # E19146 in the horizontal position.
The advantage for you is that it will mount to the space you need it to fit. The only disadvantage of using the Vertical Track # E19146 is that there are less anchor points to hook into than the Horizontal E-Track, part # EM59150.
