If you were to use it just for trailer light functions it would work fine. You would plug in the the 4-Way you currently have, then attach the ground wire to the XC90 frame. The other 3 wires are for reverse lights, trailer brakes and a power source. If you do not need any of these functions, you can tape these leads up and out of the way.

You will not have to go with a hitch, the Yakima HangOut 3 Bike Trunk Mounted Rack , # Y02638, will work on the 2005 Volvo XC90. The only thing that the Prodigy RF # TK94FR needs to function properly is a functioning 7-Way connector on the tow vehicle.
