Removing the clips can be pretty difficult. The easiest way to remove the clips is to use a trim pad remover # ALL648544.
You also may be able to use a flat head screw driver but this would create a higher rise for damaging the clips. view full answer...
In some cases, you will need to loosen and pull back any covering that is in the way to drill the required holes in the bumper beam to install Curt trailer hitch # 11054 on a 2004 Volkswagen Passat. A build date of 2006 on what amounts to a 2007 Volkswagen Passat Wagon is going to require either a different harness, # 119250KIT, the other option is to change the way that # 118530 is pinned out on the connectors that attach to the tail light wiring.

The Curt wiring harness # C56388 is a standard 4-way connector that's commonly used in the United States. It powers the running, brake, and turn signals on a trailer. In order to connect your trailer with a European connector you'll need to replace the connector with a standard trailer side 4-way like part # HM38134. You'll need to determine which wires on the trailer are for each function and wire them into the new 4-way. On the 4-way the white wire needs to be grounded to a clean... view full answer...

The trailer wiring harness manufacturers design the powered converters so that the draw their 12-volt power directly from the vehicle battery for a very good reason. Doing so keeps the vehicle wiring fully isolated from the wiring of the trailer. Short circuits in trailer wiring are very common, keeping the trailer wiring isolated from the vehicle will help prevent the wiring in your Passat from being damaged if a short circuit occurs in the wiring on the trailer. Trailer wiring is easy... view full answer...

You might be able to connect to the brake switch. Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and carefully probe the wires exiting the brake switch. If you find one wire that only shows voltage when the brake pedal is pressed (but not with the running lights or turn signals) then you can tap the red wire from your Prodigy into that circuit.
The third brake light circuit might be a viable option to find a clean dedicated brake signal as well. Some of the newer VW's use Pulse Width Modulation... view full answer...
