Modifying a Trailer Wiring Harness to Work on a 2006 Volkswagen Passat Station Wagon with 2007 Body
Question:
You mentioned modifications needed. Can you detail what mods are needed or can this harness work with my car? I have installed this system and it has running lites only, on flat 4 connector. When tested, no brake lights, no turn signals for flat 4 connector. Also, can this be connected with fuse to rear rgt side power pointcig. liter? instead of running all the way to the main battery.

A build date of 2006 on what amounts to a 2007 Volkswagen Passat Wagon is going to require either a different harness, # 119250KIT, the other option is to change the way that # 118530 is pinned out on the connectors that attach to the tail light wiring.
I have included some pictures on how the connectors should be pinned for you. On the left side, you just have to switch the yellow and brown wire positions on both connectors in the harness.
For the right side it will be a mirror opposite of what it is now. Look for the little numbers on the connectors where the wires go in. The red wire should be in spot 4, green in spot 3, and the 2 white wires in spots 1 and 2. This is for both connectors on this side.
The harnesses are only tested and rated for use when connected to the vehicle battery so you need to connect them to the battery and not anywhere else. There are several methods for making that connection. I have included a link to an FAQ with some tips.
