I recommend testing the reverse light wire (center pin) on your 2017 Tacoma's 7-way plug for 12 continuous volts to make sure it's hot. Using a tester like the LCD Digital Circuit Tester Item # PTW2993 will do the trick. You will need a second person in the cab of the truck who can put it into reverse. With your trailer connected your P3 brake controller # 90195 should show 0.0 with a picture of a truck and traielr when the trailer is connected. If it does not, then the controller is not sensing the trailer. If that is the case, you would not have any trailer brakes.

It should have been hooked up and fully functional from the factory. Some times there is a wire that will need to connected, but that is only on vehicles that do not have the 7-Way from the factory, but are pre-wired for them.
