Brophy ball mount # BM96 has a 5-1/2 inch rise so that will get you 1/2 inch closer. You would not add the height of the ball though because the coupler on the trailer covers the ball so the ball height is a non-factor. The only other thing you can do is lower the height of the trailer.

What you have found in your hitch tube is an intentional device added to the hitch to prevent you from using a Class II only hitch accessory in a Class I hitch. Class I hitches are lower capacity and Class II accessories will be too heavy and could potentially damage the hitch.

I'm unaware of a Class II hitch available for the 2015 Mazda 3. A Class I hitch, like the Draw-Tite # 24914 would have a 2000 lb towing/200 lb tongue weight capacity. This hitch would handle a 1000 lb trailer with no problem, but since the hitch capacity is lower than the 2500 lb towing capacity of the vehicle, you'll be limited to the capacity of the hitch.

The best trailer hitch for a 2014 Mazda 3 for carrying a bike rack is going to be the Draw Tite hitch # 24914 because it has a shorter install time listed and because unlike the Curt you would not need to use a stabilizer strap with it since you planned on carrying a bike rack.

I do have a solution for you, however all of our available ball mounts for 1-1/4 inch receivers feature a ball hole diameter of 3/4 inches.
I recommend simply going with a new 50mm hitch ball like the Draw-Tite # 63912, which features a 3/4 inch diameter shank.
