I'd recommend the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, part # 13354. Curt manufactures their hitches in the USA. Draw-Tite is an American owned company, but their hitches are manufactured in Mexico.
If you'll be using the hitch for towing purposes, you'll need a few more parts to complete your towing system:

Ball mount, part # 2923
Trailer ball, part # 19261 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 63845 for a 2 inch. view full answer...

Its shank is 1-1/4-inches in diameter and 2-1/2-inches long. view full answer...
The Hitch Extender, # he18, is hollow at both ends so that would be tubular steel. The use of a hitch extender will reduce the capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. If the hitch started with a 350 pounds tongue weight capacity, by using this extension that amount will be reduced to 175 pounds. view full answer...

All the hitches we offer for your 2008 Volvo XC90 use square tube construction. No drilling, trimming or vehicle modification will be required, the hitch bolts to existing holes in the vehicle.
