An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Suspension System Installation - 2005 Dodge Dakota

Today on our 2005 Dodge Dakota, well be installing the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System, part number TDDR05. Before we begin installing our new Timbrens, well first need to remove the old or manufacturers bump stop. To do this, well remove the fasteners securing it in place, tilting it down away from the frame and unhooking it out of the frame. Well go ahead and set the old bump stop aside as it will not be reinstalled. However, do hang on to the fastener as well use it with the new hardware. Now that we have the manufacturers bump stop out, we need to go ahead and take the weight off the rear suspension.

Since we have ours up on a lift well go ahead and raise the body of the vehicle. Now, well go over to the bench and assemble our new Timbren spring. Well take the upper bracket which has a threaded nut built-in, the Aeon spring with a built-in washer and our bolt running it through the washer up through the Aeon spring and into the upper bracket. Once we have it installed, well can go ahead and tighten it down. Just as we removed the old bump stop, well install our new Timbren.

Putting the hook into the frame and then swinging the bracket up against the frame securing it with the manufacturers fastener we removed previously. Now with that done, we need to assemble and secure the lower fastener. Well take the lower fastener bracket and feed it over the axle and into position. Then we can take the lower bail clamp, slide it up over the lower fastener and secure it with a flat washer and lock nut. And well go ahead and repeat the same process on the drivers side.

We can go ahead and put the weight of the vehicle back down onto the suspension, bring our Timbrens into normal resting position. And that will complete the install of our Timbren Suspension Enhancement System, part number TDDR05 on our 2005 Dodge Dakota.

This was my second experience with Timbren. This was for my 2010 Dodge Dakota. Great platform without a lot of aftermarket support. Timbren had a set of these designed just for my truck. I installed and it solved the sagging rear end of the truck and swaying when cornering when carrying my pop up slide in camper. This is a n easy install and completely worth the investment.

First of all…I’m a 64 year old woman that is 5’4” tall. I put these on myself in the garage by jacking up the rear bumper to lift the suspension. One or twice a week I hook up a 16’ trailer and put 2 mowers on it that weigh 1100 lbs each. Before I installed these, the chains in the trailer were dragging on the ground even after I wrapped them a couple of times. Now…they are 6-8” off the ground.
This product is wonderful and easy to install. When my truck is not pulling the trailer, it rides much better. I would recommend these to small truck owners if they need a little extra support. By the way, the kit came with 1” spacers that could be installed on each side, but I didn’t see a need for them.

GREAT PRODUCT!!

These worked well on my 2006 Dodge Dakota 4WD Quad cab with the 4.7L V8. I trailered loads back and forth between Florida and Connecticut on my 6.5 x 12 foot trailer and the bed of the truck was loaded at the same time and these rubber suspension pieces worked well. I installed the full system with the cone and disk which means the ride around town when the truck was unloaded was a bit rough but not uncomfortable. I think these are a much better choice than the auxillary metal springs applied over your factory leaf springs.

Dodge Dakota

Installed on my Dodge Dakota due to my Atv blowing my suspension out of my truck. Once they were installed it immediately fixed the problem and makes a very comfortable ride when the truck is loaded. When the truck is not loaded it is somewhat bumpy of a ride.

by:

Stopped rear end sag to less than 1 inch with heavy 22 foot boat was a little harder to install on the right side because of catalict converter and sway bar great shipping and service

Product arrived sooner than expected, yea!!! All components were easily installed thanks to your videos. A test drive today revealed that all is in good working order. Thanks so much for the prompt delivery and very descriptive videos.

They helped in keeping my 2005 Dakota from squatting so much when pulling my boat and made it easier to pull, they did make truck stiffer which lead to a rougher ride when not pulling the boat that’s why I gave it a four star and not a five

Very happy with this product. Easy to install and performs well

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Definitely a must have when towing..stiff without a load but night and day difference while towing my travel trailer, better traction, steering and braking. Easy quick install..only issue I had was with the long bolts they sent with the spacer kit (optional for lift) the bolt diameter was too wide to fit through the holes on the bracket..but a trip to the local hardware store took care of that.

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

The order with Will at etrailer was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, Installation was not easy but not too bad, The hardest part was removing the factory pieces I removed them from below which was a blind nut removal operation. This is on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. After removal of the factory pieces I discovered that access is much easier on top between the tire and the mud flap, I turned the front wheels inward and they didn't have to be removed. The front of the motorhome had to be raised quite a bit to get the Timbren piece jnserted. Also I learned to tighten the bolt and nut in the Timbren bumper as much as possible before installation because there is no access to the bolt head when tightening the top nut to keep the bolt from turning, preventing tightening the nut.

by:

First off the product was beat up with paint/power coating missing in several places on both. I was putting on a brand new truck with less than 800 miles on it so I elected to touch up before install. I’ve hear a lot about Timbren but never had them. I had airbags on my F350 but when I switched to a new Tundra I went with Timbrens. I’m a bit disappointed in the ride. Feels like I can feel a “bump” in the truck from the rubber pick hitting the axle when I go on a bumpy road. Thinking I should have went with airbags. As far as having a load on the truck and helping with the squat, they do as they are advertised.

by:

They do exactly what I wanted them to do. They support my boat trailer and when not towing, they don’t touch the bumpers everything’s great.

by:

These work great for giving you a solid towing experience when loaded heavy; however, when driving empty you definitely get the jounce bumper “into the air” experience when driving on moderate to rough roads. I have the recommended gap installed between the axle and the timbrens, but with terrible midwest roads and highways it doesn’t seem to be enough gap. Smooth roads it rides great. It’s driving 80mph on the expressway and hitting potholes or large cracks where these will hit causing uncomfortable harsh ride.

I’ve resorted to installing and then subsequently removing these anytime I use my travel trailer for longer trips (30minute removal time). I tow a 7000lb loaded travel trailer with an f150 and just needed something to make the soft half ton suspension from porpoising too much on bad-roads. Mission accomplished when towing as I said these things work great for heavy loads. It almost rides better with heavy loads…. I was going to give airbags a try but the reviews from others have scared me from those because even with airbags at the lowest setting you still get the jouncing on bumpy roads.

  • Timbren Suspension Enhancement that Fits 2007 Dodge Dakota with 2 inch Lift
The Timbren kit part # TDDR05 is a fit for your 2007 Dodge Dakota and the only option since you have a 2 inch lift. You'll need to use the spacers # A25723-90AH00 for each inch of a lift you have. So you'd need a total of 4 of these to take up the space created by the lift kit that you have. The Timbren kit gives you the same support as the air bags but it's a much easier install and easier in the long run as well since you don't have to maintain air pressure or worry about leaks.

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2010 Dodge Dakota Towing a 3,000 Pound Trailer
In cases such as yours where suspension enhancement is not solving the problem you would benefit from using weight distribution. If the tongue weight on your trailer is 500 pounds, loaded and ready to tow, you will want a system with a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses that 500 pound tongue weight. I recommend a system with a range of 400 to 800 pounds. You can use the Pro Series RB2 Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit with Shank, # RP67509. This system has a 400 to 800 pound...

Adding springs, like the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, # TDDR05, will help to keep your truck level. This system will work on both 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive models of the 2006 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. I have included a link to the installation details below. For your trailer sway problem, I recommend adding a weight distribution system with built-in sway control. This will also help to level your truck. • Recommendation for Eliminating Sag in the Rear Suspension of a Dodge Dakota when Towing
The Timbren Suspension System, item # TDDR05, is designed to help with stabilizing and leveling your 2007 Dodge Dakota while providing a more comfortable ride when towing or carrying a heavy load. When towing a trailer that causes the rear of the vehicle to sag you will not be eliminating the problem with the Timbren system, because all of the weight of the trailer tongue will still be on the ball and the hitch. The rear of the vehicle will remain more level but the tongue weight will still...
