Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Yakima GateKeeper 6 Bike Tailgate Pad

How's it going neighbors This is Ed here with etrailer.com and we're taking a look at the Yakima Gatekeeper six bike carrier for the back of your full size pickup. Adding a bike pad to the back of your pickup could be a solution to allow you to get multiple bikes out for your journey on the back of your truck in the easiest way without anything really hanging from the back of your hitch. Maybe you have a cargo basket or something else that you want to use in conjunction with that. The trade off is, it's a really cost effective way to get multiple bikes on the road with you, but you will be making contact with the other bikes. As you can see, the tires are resting against the forts and you're having a contact to the pad underneath right here that secures the bike. Here in the truck bed, you can see we also have some bike to bike contact as well.

You can do what you can to separate, use foam or pool noodles or something to try to keep some separation. However, it is something that's gonna be hard to avoid with this type of setup to get your bikes on the road. However, the way that your bikes are secured using the sit tight cradles and fastened with the G hook strap, these guys are just gonna hook in here and it's padded to protect the finish on your bike. So it's gonna minimize the contact that you're gonna, well, the damage that you could potentially receive on your frame but you know, it's kind of one of those deals where you know you need to move six bikes on the back of your truck, you don't necessarily need the full capacity of your bed. This would be a great option to go to get those things on the road.

Now, with it being a Yakima product, the quality of the materials are gonna be really solid. You have a material that's UV resistant and it's gonna hold up against the weather and elements being just out on the back of a vehicle. To get an idea how the gatekeeper looks in the real world, I just took a quick spin around our test course here at etrailer.com to get, and you see the bikes are stable, sturdy, and not falling off the back of the truck. We loaded up with four bikes and I feel very confident we'd be able to get up to the six bike capacity without having any issue other than the contact that we already spoke about. So let's take a closer look at our G hook right here on our strap.

The straps themselves are nice and sturdy and they feel secure. You know how sometimes you can get a feel for nylon straps that they're not gonna really hold up, but you can tell that these are nice and and sturdy. The foam on the inside of your pad of your cradle is nice and firm, so they're snug up against the bottom of your frame. And the felt on the inside of here is gonna be nice and soft to create, you know, to avoid any scratching that could happen. Again, your G hook goes in really easily and it's very, very secure.

As far as the different types of bikes that you could transport on the gatekeeper, I would feel comfortable going with mountain bikes, road bikes. It's when you get into unconventional frames like step throughs or maybe some e-bikes or even kids bikes, the spacing on those are a little bit different. So you may encounter some issues and sadly, that's one of those things. It's kind of a trial and error to see if it works. However, road bikes, mountain bikes, and traditional frame bikes, you should be okay to get six loaded up. At 62 inches, the gatekeeper's gonna fit most full-sized trucks, and it's going to give you that almost custom fit where it's not hanging over or obstructing anything. Any more than six full size bikes on the back of your pickup. I would say the biggest drawback for these types of carriers, like truck bed pads in general, is the fact that you're gonna have to lift your bike up, you know, up over your tailgate to get it secured. And we're just gonna lift up our hook. And now we're just gonna lift our bike out of the bed of the truck and remove our other bikes and get a closer look at the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper features the hindsight window that allows you to, A: expose your backup camera, so you can maintain function of it when you're not loaded, and get access to your release for your tailgate. To secure the gatekeeper to the back of your bed, you're gonna feed through the straps here and they're actually textured so they don't get stuck and bound up underneath your tailgate. And you're just gonna work it through the strap here and fasten her down. And you have a little cuff here to put up your excess strap just to keep it out your way. As far as security, you don't have an included bike walk, but you can add a cable lock that'll help secure your bikes to the carrier in turn of securing it to the truck. So this has been a look at the Yakima Gatekeeper six bike carrier for your full size pickup. I'm Ed. This is etrailer.com, and you have a great day.

Perfect for hauling around my bikes. Super easy to setup on my 2020 Chevy Colorado.

by:

The concept is good and the materials seem fine. The wheels ocme off with the design for attaching it to the tailgate (moves around) and managing the flap. I'm not even sure why there's a flap (useless). The straps/buckles for attaching the bikes are not the best choices.

Simple, affordable, gets the job done. I would recommend this to anyone with a pickup truck who wants to take bikes with them.

I love shopping at etrailer.com. They seem to test their products and make sure they are compatible with my exact year of truck. I purchased a tailgate pad from Yakima. This is the second one I bought. the first one was from cyclingdeals that I bought from [online vendor] and After doing lots of research I thought it would work with my back up camera. Well once I received it I learned that it wouldn’t work with my back up camera. I returned it and started googling again. etrailer.com came up with a pad that they said would fit my truck and work with my backup camera. I ordered it, tried it out and it works great. thank you etrailer.com.

I purchased this Yakima gatekeeper due to the large flap that allows access to the tailgate handle and rear camera. Bike straps are solid and the little extra padding for the downtube is nice.

We hav a Ford F150 quad cab.

This
gatekeeper fits perfect.

It does take 2 of us to maneuver the gatekeeper and the tailgate to get the middle strap attached but we love the product. We’ll figure out a way, I’m sure, to do this solo.

Highly recommend.

Very rugged product and well not scratch your tailgate!!! Holds 1 or 6 bikes with ease!!

by:

Right product delivered ahead of schedule during the holiday ordering season. Couldn't be happier with the product and service. Outstanding!

by:

Great shopping experience (much more straightforward than amazon), product exactly as expected. Based purchase on very helpful etrailer [online] video.

by:

Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad - timely service/shipping and product is excellent-- far better than my bike rack that mounted in the truck bed between the bed rails--securing the bikes is now a 3 minute effort and no climbing into the truck

by:

Fits perfectly on my 2500HD. Looks nice and works great. First impression is it's high quality and will hold up well.

by:

To me it was average after 1 year, which I feel is a better review of an item anyway. Withen 1 or 2 weeks of having it , one of the plastic rings holding the straps broke. etrailer was very good at wanting to replace it, but ,I didn't feel like sending it back( one thing the box it came in was huge), which is on me. I could fix it myself.
It held 2 of my wifes bikes , and one of mine which way over 28 lbs. each. I purchased a carbon bike about a year agoand it always falls to the side when strapped in . I've bunge corded to help that out, it still doesn't hold it tight. I even tried old wash rags around straps, but to no avail.
After 1 year the velcro is still good, but where it attaches to the strap is worn and is very hard to keep tight, we've only use it everyother weekend and never when the temp goes under 45 degrees.
the material it's made of is still in very good shape. The only other con is it would be nice if the flap coud be velcrod open so you can see out of the backing camera

by:

The Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad works great. It's easy to put on and take off as needed and protects the tailgate and bikes we carry. Perflect for an old Ranger or hopefully soon the a new Maverick.

THIS YAKIMA TAILGATE BIKE CARRIER IS
VERY
WELL MADE. THE CRADLES TO SET
YOUR FRAME IN ARE NICELY PADDED. THE
VELCRO STRAPS KEEP THEM SECURE DURING
TRANSPORT. THIS IS GREAT PRODUCT.
ETRAILER ALWAYS HAS THE BEST PRICES
AND SERVICE. THANKS ETRAILER!

by:

The cradle straps do not have enough flexibility to provide a secure tight fit for smaller diameter framed road and hybrid type bikes. Just a poor design of the straps as there is only about half inch of the velcro actually securing the strap when fully tightened while the remaining velcro (over an inch) not making any contact. Product is really only for larger tubed bikes such as mountain bikes and child bikes. My bikes would be more secure just laying them down in the bed of the truck with a couple bungee cords.

by:

Works great. Very convenient. Leaves a good amount of bed space for other items like camping equipment etc. Easy tailgate access to the Tundra through the handle access flap. Would definitely recommend.

by:

Great bike carrier! We carry 4 bikes and this keeps them secure even on dirt and bumpy roads. It takes a few minutes to get it on the tailgate correctly, but once on it works great!

by:

Easy to put on and take off the tailgate. Keeps bikes completely secure.
With a little tuck you can even still use the reverse camera!

by:

Great product

by:

its a quality made product, but doesn't fit a 2017 RAM tailgate very well. A RAM tailgate is wider in the middle which causes the tailgate cover to have a big wrinkle on either side of center caused by the cover being tighter on the ends than in the middle where the tailgate is wider. My bikes didn't sit very well on the tailgate, I believe mostly because of the wide RAM tailgate. I tried on the outside and in the middle, which didn't make a difference.

by:

The Gatekeeper has performed as expected in a 2017 Ram 2500. 5 Stars always goes to etrailer. They are an outstanding company that always exceeds expectations with customer service.

We ordered for a family vacation where we pull a travel trailer with our pickup and needed a place for all the bikes. It works really well and kept all bikes stable and with no damage over a very long trip. Great product!

  • Can Tailgate Access Flap of Yakima Tailgate Bike Rack Have Camera Access at all Times
Hey Laurie, if you wanted to have the tailgate access flap open all the time on the Yakima Tailgate Bike Rack part # Y38AR you would need to fold it back and tuck it under the top portion of the cover to allow your rear camera to see behind you.

We have ways to carry ebikes in your truck bed, but not with the Swagman rack. What you can use instead - if your bike weighs no more than 50 lbs - is the Thule Insta-Gater Pro Truck Bed Bike Rack # TH93VR, which can carry bikes with tires up to 5 inches wide. If your bike weighs more than 50 lbs you would need the Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad # Y38AR.

  • Recommended Tailgate Bike Pad For 2018 GM Sierra 3500
I recommend the Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad and Bike Carrier for Full-Size Trucks - 62" Wide, part # Y38AR. It is Yakima's full size truck tailgate pad. The carrier is padded on the top to protect your bikes with a felt like underside of the carrier to protect the finish of your truck. In addition, there are six padded cradles that will keep your bikes secure via their down tube while protecting the finish of your bikes. It has a stow away HindSight flap that will allow you to have use...

  • Does the Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad Have a Weight Capacity
The Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad # Y38AR does not have a weight capacity for the exact reason you mentioned. The truck will handle all of the weight. When it comes to the straps those don't have a weight rating either because they just help to keep a bike from shifting on the pad. When you start to get into heavier E-Bikes it's always a good idea to use an actual bike rack for those because they are nicer bikes and you won't want them to be resting on the frame like that - at least for...
