Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Aluminum Wheel - KE55JR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14 radial trailer tire in a Load Range C mounted on this 14-inch black mesh aluminum wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this tire-and-wheel assembly's ideal for stock trailers, utility trailers, and even campers. The wheel is a Sendel Series T17 aluminum wheel and it's a mesh style design wheel with a nice matte black finish on it. And if you notice, the front and even the back of the wheel has a clear coating for protection. Now this wheel does not include a center cap.

If you do want a center cap, we do sell those separately on our website. You do wanna make sure to get a center cap that'll match this diameter of the pilot hole on the wheel. 'cause when you install it, your cap will go through this hole. So the diameter on this hole, pilot hole, is 3.19 inches. Now the wheel itself, the diameter is 14 inches.

The width on just the wheel is 5-1/2 inches. And this wheel does have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. If you wanna measure the bolt pattern on a wheel like this that's an odd number of lugs, in this case, five, all you have to do is pick any one of the holes, let's say this one, and then you'll measure across to either this hole or to this hole. But when you measure, it's from the center of the starting hole to the edge of the hole that you measure to. So on this wheel, it'll measure 4-1/2 inches, so this will tell you this is a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

The wheel lug size this uses is 1/2 inch by 20. Weight capacity on just the wheel is 2,200 pounds. Now the tire that's mounted on this is the Kenda Karrier. It's a special trailer radial tire, and it is a special trailer design, which will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. Now this tire is created specifically for trailers.

It's not intended for use on other vehicles. Does use double steel belts, full nylon plies, combined for superior function and long life. The tread on it is a computer-generated tread design and they offer premium rubber-compound materials to give you superior traction in wet or dry conditions. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, and it's usually right down around the rim. Right here, it'll say ST, for Special Trailer, 205/75R14. The R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this is 8 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated, it's 26 inches. And this tire is a Load Range C, which means it's a 6-ply rated tire. Has a maximum load capacity of 1,925 pounds at 60 psi. Last thing I do wanna mention, almost all the new trailer tires do come with a speed rating stamped on them and it's stamped on the sidewall by a letter designation. And where that's located is right after the tire size we just went over. You'll see two numbers for the load index, and then there's the letter M. Speed rating M will mean this has a speed rating of 81 miles per hour. And this assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications. But that should do it for the review on this Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14 radial trailer tire in a Load Range C mounted on this 14-inch black mesh aluminum wheel.
