Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2023 Toyota Tacoma

Hey, guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today, we have a 2023 Toyota Tacoma, we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Draw-Tite Class III Two-Inch Hitch Receiver. Adding the two-inch hitch receiver to the back of your Tacoma is gonna allow you to tow small trailers, put a bike rack on the back, or maybe even a cargo carrier. A lot of people think just because a truck has a bed doesn't mean that you're never gonna need any extra space, but I can tell you as a truck owner, you often run out of space for those bulkier items, like coolers or some larger luggage. So adding a cargo carrier on the back or making yourself some more room for your bikes on a bike rack is definitely gonna be a plus. Now, if you are planning on towing a trailer, it will have nice large safety chain loops here, so you can get safety chains of many different shapes and sizes.

Installed on there, you can see we have two together. This is a pretty big clevis. I can't imagine you having a tow a trailer has a much larger one than that, so it's gonna fit with ease. The hitch pin hole is going to be a 5/8-inch hitch pin. So if you already have a pin and clip, that's great.

This hitch does not come with one. If you decide to pick up an accessory off our website, chances are it's probably gonna come with one. Some measurements, so you know what you're getting into. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost part of our bumpers, about 2 1/2 inches. I really like how this hitch sits.

It sits almost flush. It's still a little bit recessed, so you don't have to worry about hitting it with your shin. From the ground to the top inside of the receiver tube, it's gonna be about 18 3/4 inches off the ground. That's a good measurement if you're looking to get a ball mount because you can compare that to the height of your trailer coupler when your trailer's level, and that's gonna tell you the rise or drop that you're gonna need in that trailer ball mount. When it comes to the weight capacities of this hitch, you're gonna have a max tongue weight capacity of 1,050 pounds and a gross trailer weight rating of 7,000 pounds.

Now, if you decide to use this truck or this hitch to pull a small camper or maybe a trailer that uses weight distribution, this hitch is rated for that. That is going to increase your tongue weight capacity up to 1,200 pounds and your max trailer weight capacity up to 8,000 pounds. Now, when it comes to getting this hitch installed, it is not a bad installation at all. There's gonna be two bolts on either side of the hitch that'll go right up into weld nuts. Underneath on the bottom of the frame rail, I'd say probably the hardest part is fish wiring some hardware through this cross-member here. You just have to pull it down through just for some extra support out by the end of the hitch receiver. Now, with that being said, all three of the hitches that are available for this truck at this time, all of them install exactly like this. So regardless, you're gonna have to install a hitch just like this. But with that being said, let's go ahead and pull it inside and show you how we did it. To begin our installation, we're gonna need to take our fish wires, and for the passenger side we're gonna use this hole. For the driver's side, we're gonna use this hole. It's the two on either side of the center hole, but for the passenger side, we're gonna have to use a longer fish wire. So I just took some airline tube. You can use a coat hanger, whatever you want, but it's gotta be long enough to go from the end of our frame rail up here all the way to this hole. You'll want to put your spacer block on first and then thread on your bolt. We will go through the end of our frame rail and we're just gonna try to come out that second hole there. This can be tricky, but I just try to feel around in there. We'll take that fish wire once we get it to pull out there, pull our hardware down and then into place. Now, the driver's side's gonna be quite a bit easier because we have an access hole right here. Do not try to go through that access hole for the passenger side because there's a tube welded in here, and you can't get the hardware on either side of it. So we're going to take our fish wire, go up through here, slide the spacer block up and in. Take the head of the bolt, rotate it around, tuck it up in there, and then pull on it. (fish wire rattling) And get it to pull down. With an extra set of hands, we can get our hitch in place. You wanna take your two fish wires, slide them down through these holes. It's just gonna help to line up everything. And we're gonna take our hitch, lift it up into place, and we'll line it up with the factory holes in our frame rail. And we'll take our bolts with our conical tooth washers with the teeth facing the hitch. We'll get that threaded into place. (bolt rattling) Now we're gonna take a 19-millimeter socket and snug these down. (drill whirring) Take a conical tooth washer and then your nut. If it helps, if you take the conal tooth washer, you push it against the bolt, it'll hold that bolt in place while you start threatening that. You can come back and snug these two nuts up. (drill whirring) Now, we're gonna take a torque wrench, come back and torque all of our hardware to the specifications and the instructions. (torque wrench beeping) Once you get everything torqued down properly, that's gonna do it for the installation. Hopefully this video helped you decide whether or not the Draw-Tite Class III Two-Inch Hitch Receiver is right for you in your 2023 Toyota Tacoma.

Major packaging damage to box carton recorded and photographed immediately upon delivery.
Trailer hitch (Class IV - 2” X 2” opening) appears, so far, to be NOT damaged (?).
Three (3) pictures of damaged carton are attached.
I haven’t attempted to instal hitch, yet.
My guess is that UPS is possibly incapable of processing heavy items like a trailer hitch.
OR
The packaging design is probably not strong enough and/or sturdy enough to protect a heavy trailer hitch.
I’m hoping the hitch is not bent so all the bolt holes line up during installation.

Excellent product. Mounting took about 30 minutes or so as promised. The wires that were included to thread the 2 bolts through the square channel is genius. I’d recommend this product to anyone.

Very easy to install! Product was as described, and instructions were clear and easy to follow.

Trailer. Hitch is very tough and the finish is still glossy and used alot

I always buy my trailer supplies from etrailer! You folks are the best.

by:

Overall the quality of the hitch seems good, but it took some grinding to get it to clear one of the frame gussets, and also took some washers to shim it properly under the two bumper bolts. I was a little bit surprised at this.

by:

Easy to instated, great product , and fast shipping.

Perfect fit. Simple install in about 20 minutes. Lined up with factory bolts perfectly.

This hitch seems solid but should have never left the factory it was made in. Passenger side mounting bracket was welded off angle and bent about 1 inch out of alignment. Etrailer customer service was great in informing that product is made out of spring/flex steel and can be reshaped to fit and sent an email with suggestions of how to do it. With alot of work with a hydraulic jack and ratchet strap I was able to get the bracket aligned and the hitch mounted. etrailer shipping was fast. Product was well packaged and undamaged during shipping. As I said before, etrailer customer service was great. I may have gotten that 1 abnormal misshaped hitch that slipped past Draw-Tite's QC and others may be much better, (I never had this problem with Reese in years past) but based on this experience, I can't personally recommend this product. If I had to do it again I'd try the Curt hitch instead.

2016 Toyota Tacoma

I was so excited when the package arrived and couldn't wait to install it on my truck. Product was exactly like the photo when I made the purchase. Installation was realitivley easy. Bolts attached directly to the frame on the underside of my 2016 Tacoma.
I wanted to add the trailer hitch to my truck for the purpose of attaching my bike rack that inserts into the hitch and has the ability to carry 2 bikes. Before the hitch I would toss my bikes into the back of the bed of my truck.

I would most certainly recommend this product to anyone who's considering purchasing a trailer hitch. The price was the best that I could find.

Thanks
Steve B.

Both hitch and wiring harness were delivered on time, no problems. Hitch is well constructed for a mass produced item. All items needed for installation are included. It is a 2 man operation as the hitch is 45 lbs. We were very impressed with the on-line video (youtube) for our yr (2016) Tacoma. Was VERY impressed with “threaded” fish-wire included. That part was the easiest. Hardest part for us was lining up and installing the 4 bolts to the frame. Spacing was just a little off and we almost had to remove hitch and enlarge holes on hitch mounting bracket-to-frame. After several attempts, we were able to get all 4 bolts threaded.
Wiring harness (flat-4) installation went well, just time consuming as we were in a driveway and didn’t have use of a full size lift. Only suggestion would have had truck-to-trailer plug coming out of Tacoma knockout box on bumper instead of hanging loose under bumper.

You do need basic understanding/experience with hand tools and wire splicing/assembly to install both items even with inline videos.

Drawtite hitches are all I've ever used, the extra hole in the receiver for a j-pin stabilizer is the reason why. Anyone that has had a rattling bike rack or cargo carrier would appreciate the silence and security of a Drawtite receiver. Perfectly engineered for my Tacoma and easily installed in less than 1/2 hour.

Excellent, very sturdy yet easy to install. A perfect fit for my little 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR 2WD, it took less than 30 minutes for my husband to install by himself. I will be buying from you guys again, I have my eyes on the running boards just can't decide which design to get that would match perfectly with my new rims and tires my husband is getting for me. Once I have my wheels then I will be able to decide which running boards to get from you guys. Thank you.

2017 Toyota Tacoma

I received the product on the day it was said to arrive, the box itself was in pretty rough shape. However the product seemed undamaged, the trailer hitch was quick and easy to install even with just one person installing it. I will be using this new hitch to tow my new boat here pretty soon so I am excited to try it out! I couldn't be happier about finding etrailer.com, Nicholas C helped me through the process of making sure I got what I needed and that it works with my 2017 Toyota Tacoma. And it did so thank you !

2017 Tacoma, Great customer service, fast free shipping, good price, bolt pulling wires were great, my hitch was half of a bolt hole off when i tried to install with all of the mounting bolts loose, contacted etrailer, they said common occurrence and sent an email for ways to flex the hitch mounting brackets. Bottle jack and lumber flexed it enough for easy perfect fit.

2019 Toyota Tacoma SR Access Cab with Utility Package 6' bed....I wasn't sure if I had the right hitch for my truck, it fits different models and I didn't see mine there, but Lori B at etrailer assured me it was. I live 2 hours away and could have gone and picked it up but they had it shipped to me and i recieved it the next day. via ups I attached the wires to the bolts and spacers to fish them thru like it shows on the paper, once that's done i moved on to the 4 main bolts. TAKE CARE to run the bolts up each hole to make sure the threads are clean. I have a linex undercoating and it wasn't easy cleaning out the holes, I managed to get a bolt started and then ran it back and forth a few times in each hole. the hitch doesn't weigh that much its easy enough to prop one end up on your leg and get a bolt started, once that's done get one on the other side. once I had those 4 in and snug i removed the wires for the last 2 but wasn't sure if there was enough threads to get the washer and nut on "look at the picture" there's a gap. so I put a nut on and snugged it up, then was able to do it right. all in all it was really easy to install. thank you etrailer, thank you Lori B.

Yes, you will definitely want to go with a class IV hitch for pulling a 2019 Grey Wolf 26' Travel Trailer with your 2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5. The best hitch available for the 2023 Toyota Tacoma is the Draw-Tite Class 4 Hitch # 75238.
