Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2007 Chevrolet HHR - Curt

Today on our 2007 Chevrolet HHR, we're going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11447. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a bicycle rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is approximately 6". From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 10". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch.

We're going to go ahead and begin our installation here underneath the vehicle on the driver's side. We're going to need to lower down the exhaust by removing some rubber exhaust hangers. Depending on your vehicle will depend on how many there are. On this vehicle, there's 1 here, 1 on the other side up in here, as well as 1 on the front right here. To remove these rubber exhaust hangers, we're going to use a little spray lubricant and a large pry bar. To make things a little easier, we found that if you go ahead in front of the axle here and you remove this rubber exhaust hanger as well, it will allow you to move the exhaust around enough to get to the areas that you need to.

Just repeat the same process up here on this one as well. Now that we have our exhaust lowered down out of the way, let's go ahead and point out our mounting locations. There's a total of 4 mounting locations, 2 on each side. We'll begin over here on the driver's side. We'll be using this hole here as well as well as this hole here.

In this forward mounting location will be this access hole to install the hardware in the frame as well. Over here on the passenger's side, we'll be using this hole here and this hole here. Again, this hole here will be used as a access hole to install the hardware into the vehicle's frame. This rear mounting location here on the passenger's side will need to be drilled out using a 1/2" drill bit. A quick tech tip for drilling out this rear hole, if you start out with a little bit smaller bit and kind of knock the lip that's right here off just enough, it will make using the 1/2" bit a lot easier and it won't grab or bite so hard and try to twist the drill. Once you have that lip knocked down you can go ahead and take your 1/2" drill bit and make sure that the hole goes all the way through.

Next, let's go over the hardware that we'll be using to install out hitch. It will be the same hardware used at all 4 locations. We'll be using a 1/2" carriage bolt, square hole spacer block, and a 1/2" flange nut. To install our hardware in the frame, we'll be using a fish wire or a pull wire to do that. We'll go ahead and start with the rear mounting location. Go ahead and feed it through, then pull the coiled end out the access hole or the forward mounting location. Put the square hole spacer block and the carriage bolt in place. Push both back up into the vehicle's frame and pull it down into position. For the forward mounting location, we'll be using the reverse pull method where we start out with the pull wire, put the square hole spacer block on, then the carriage bolt. We'll then put the carriage bolt up into the vehicle's frame, followed by the spacer block, pulling back down into position. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process over on the driver's side. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. You'll need to slide the hitch up and over the exhaust on the driver's side and then line it up with the 4 carriage bolts. Once you have the hardware lined up, we'll go ahead and install the flange nuts. With the flange nuts installed, we can go ahead and tighten down the hardware followed by torquing it to the manufacturer's specifications. Now, with all of our hardware torqued down, we can go ahead and reinstall any rubber exhaust hangers you may have removed. That will do it for the installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11447, on our 2007 Chevrolet HHR. .
