Today on our 2016 Scion iM we're going to be taking a look and installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, which is a class 1 hitch, part number C11420. This is what the hitch looks like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see, everything's pretty well hidden except for the receiver tube and safety chain loop right here. If you're wanting to maintain a clean look on your vehicle, this hitch is going to do really well for that. Also, it's a class 1 hitch with 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" receiver tube opening and it's got this little welded on reinforcement collar there. We've got the rounded steel safety chain loops right underneath here. Features a 1/2" hitch pin hole.

It mounts up into existing factory weld nuts inside the frame rails so it's a nice easy installation. This hitch also features a 200 pound max tongue weight rating and a 2000 pound gross trailer weight rating, but you will want to be sure to refer to the vehicle's owners manual to see what weight your vehicle is rated for. We'll give you some measurements to help you in your selection of hitch mounted accessories, such as bike racks or cargo carriers. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the rear bumper is 2 1/4" and the distance from the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 12 1/4". Now, let's go ahead and install it. The first thing we'll need to do once we're underneath the vehicle is we're going to need to take this exhaust and let it hang a little bit. In order to do that we'll need to remove it from the hanger right here.

First thing I'll do, is I'll put a little bit of spray lubricant up here just to try to help it slide off a little bit. If you don't have exhaust hanger pliers, you can take some channel locks or a pry bar, depending on what you have in order to help you slide it off of there. Now that we've got our exhaust dropped, we'll want to take this shield down. The first thing we'll need to do is use a 12 millimeter to take the 3 nuts that secure it down. We've got one up here, one up over here, and then one right here. Now I can take a flat head screwdriver and there's going to be 6 of these push pin fasteners total.

You just want to get under that with your flat head screwdriver, pop the center out, then the rest of that fastener will come out. All these fasteners are going to work the same way, so we'll just work our way around popping them out. The hardest one to find's probably going to be this one right up under here. It's just right behind this inner fender. The last one will be back towards the exhaust.

Then, we'll be able to take this and work it out of here. Now we'll need to remove this tow hook and in order to do that we'll use a 17 millimeter socket to take most of these bolts out. Now we're ready to clean out the holes that we're going to be using that have the existing weld nuts in the frame rail. On the passenger side we're going to be using these 2 back here, then there's one more towards the front of the vehicle. On the driver's side it's just going to be these 2 holes which are the ones that we took the tow hook out of. I'll put a little bit of spray lubricant up in there and then I'll take a wire brush in order to clean any debris out of those threads to make sure that the bolt will thread in there nicely and we don't have any problems. You want to grab a second set of hands and we'll need to feed the passenger side up over the exhaust first and then we'll just beat 00:04:14 it up into place in order to get the holes lined up. Once they're lined up you can take one of your 7/16" bolts with conical tooth washer and you want the teeth facing in towards the hitch. We'll get one started on each side and then we'll be able to install the rest of our bolts. Now, we can take a 3/4" socket and tighten down all of our bolts with conical tooth washers. Once we've got them tightened down, we can come back with a torque wrench and torque them to the specification given in the instruction manual. I've gone ahead and marked my under body panel in order to trim it according to the instructions. You want to test fit this up into place once you've got everything trimmed. If it doesn't quite fit you can trim accordingly to make sure that it does. We can replace it. With our under body panel re-installed the only thing we have left to do is re-install our exhaust hanger. That's going to complete our look at the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11420, on our 2016 Scion iM.
