Free-backing, driver's-side and passenger's-side brakes won't engage when you reverse, even if your actuator is activated. Automotive-grade friction pads and e-coated backing plates are long-lasting. Fit 14.5" to 16.5" wheels.

Features:

  • Hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with a surge-type trailer brake actuator
  • Free-backing design lets you back up without engaging the trailer brakes, even if the actuator is activated
    • Fall-away brake shoes only anchor on drums when brakes are engaged as trailer is moving forward
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gears allow for a more precise setting
  • E-coated backing plates resist wear and corrosion
  • Single plunger design
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assemblies and off of the shoes
  • Left-hand (driver's-side) brake assemblies and right-hand (passenger's-side) brake assemblies included
    • Ideal for building multiple trailers
    • Mounting bolts and hardware (BRKH1250) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Specs:

  • Quantity: 50 left-hand and 50 right-hand assemblies
  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO
  • Dimensions: 12" diameter x 2" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 5 bolt
  • Wheel size: 14-1/2", 15", 16" and 16-1/2"
  • Axle rating: 5,200 lbs, 6,000 lbs, and 7,000 lbs
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

Free-Backing Brake Assembly

Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.

Each of these free-backing hydraulic brake assemblies has a fall-away shoe, which provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward, but supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. During normal forward braking, the fall-away shoe expands to catch your brake drum. When driving in reverse, however, the fall-away shoe's extra spring will overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder. This keeps the leading edge from catching on the drum, so the shoe will not fully pivot into the drum. This exerts a smaller amount of friction, just enough to provide a minimal amount of braking when in reverse.

These trailer brake assemblies act as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for these brakes to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Uni-Servo Free Backing Hydraulic Brake Kit Installation

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the hydraulic brake kit U-Servo 00:00:02 free backing 12 inch left and right hand brake assemblies for five and a half thousand to seven thousand pounds. That's gonna be part number AKFBBRK-7.So here's what our brake assembly's gonna look like. The biggest benefit to our brake assembly here is that it is an entire assembly. We're not gonna have to worry about getting the hardware kit, a wheel cylinder, or anything else. As well as putting on the pads, they are hydraulic brake assemblies, which means they're gonna work with surge-type brake actuators. What's nice about these assemblies is that they have a free backing design. And what that means is, it's gonna let you back up without engaging the brakes, even if the actuator is activated. The fall-away brake shoe is only gonna anchor on the drum when the brakes are engaged, as the trailer is moving forward. The pads are gonna be fully bonded into the shoes and not riveted, which means that they're gonna give it a longer life and more of a bite on those brakes. The tapered edge at the bottom of our pad is gonna help prevent any kind of cracking and crumbling that can lead to a mechanical lock-up.Our brake assemblies are gonna have a fine tooth adjustment gear, and that's gonna allow us to fine tune our brakes, but it is a manual adjustment, so we are gonna have to check our brakes and adjust them periodically. There is gonna be a plug on the back that's gonna help keep out all the dirt and debris from getting inside, and this is right where we're gonna make our adjustments at.Now, the mounting flange bolt pattern is gonna be a five bolt, and it's gonna fit wheels 14 1/2, 15, 16, and 16 1/2 inch. Our brake assembly is gonna work with axles that are rated at 5,200, 6,000, and 7,000 pounds. Now, this is gonna include the left and right hand assemblies, so to start out, we're gonna go ahead and remove our drums so we can pull off this cap.

Just take a rubber mallet, and we're gonna tap it until it can come off. Put the cap aside for now. Now, on the top of the nut here, we're gonna clean some of the grease off, because there's gonna be a retaining clip that's holding it in place. Just take a shop towel and wipe off some of the excess grease so we can find that retaining clip. You're gonna want to grab a flathead screwdriver. There's gonna be a tab that's gonna be in between the two channels here, on the nut itself.

We're gonna bend that tab down, so that we can actually turn the nut and take it off. Now, you want to be careful, because our brake assembly is not gonna come with a retaining nut or washer, so you want to keep this hardware so we can re-install it.Next, we're gonna grab a pair of channel locks and we're gonna grab the nut and just loosely turn it so it'll unlock it. Then we can take it off by hand the rest of the way. Then we can pull off that retaining plate. We're gonna pull this off and set it aside, and then if you need to, again, grab a flathead screwdriver and we're gonna pull that washer off that's right behind it. So we're gonna grab the back of the hub, slowly pull it back, and we'll set the hub aside, as well.So what's gonna be holding our assembly in place is gonna be these nuts right here.

There's gonna be a total of five of them going around the axle shaft. We're gonna be using a 9/16 socket to remove them. Now, again, you want to hold onto the hardware that comes off, because our new brake assembly is not gonna come with hardware. And with the hardware removed, we are gonna have one last point that we're gonna have to pull off before we can pull the assembly out, and that's gonna be right here, where the brake line is actually attached. You need to tilt the assembly out so you can get a wrench in there to loosen that fitting. So we can take our new assembly. We're gonna slide it over the studs. Then we can reinstall those lock washers and nuts back in place.Just gonna put these in there hand tight for now, and then we can come back and tighten them all down.

With all the bolts in hand tight, I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna torque them down.So with this brake assembly in place, we're gonna go ahead and repeat that for the other remaining positions. And that will finish up your look at the hydraulic brake kit for the left and right hand side. And that's gonna be part number AKFBBRK-7.

I bought these new for less than the local brake materials shop quoted me to rebuild the old brakes. They have a nice coating that should resist rust for awhile. They seem to slow the trailer well. I would buy them again.

by:

Very helpful staff. I did all 4 breaks and bearings complete. Glad I checked things out, seals were gone and one wheel had bearings that failed and I was lucky I made it home. Also put on new brake lines and master cylinder, all good now. Tnks

After calling around to Napa, Koi and 2 other trailer companies and not receiving any help I called etrailer and got in touch with Quinn. I explained what I was needing, and he not only found me the right parts, but he also told me about the house brand which was a cheaper option. Everything showed up in 2 days and fit perfectly.

Purchase these units as part of my trailer overhaul. These bolt on in the original holes without a problem, very easy to install, added new kodiak brake lines and new drums, very pleased thus far with the product. like it's all one easy set up. I was going to buy new brakes and associate parts but after seeing these and the price I chose this route after than busting my knuckles trying to mess with springs and stuff. highly recommend

by:

Amazing value. Super fast delivery. Replaces the original AL KO for a fraction of the cost. I understand why so many folks recommended Etrailer to check with and order from.

by:

After the old backing plate was removed from my 20 year old boat trailer, the installation of the new backing plate and break assemble took less then one hour . The drum with the bearings installed slid right on .

by:

I Purchased hydraulic drum Brakes - Uni-servo backing plates form Lisa D at etrailer. I could not be more pleased. The items arrived when they were supposed to and were exactly what they were supposed to be. Lisa was very professional and knowledgeable, and followed up through email. I needed the items fast, and even after priority shipping, the cost was less than i could have found elsewhere. I will use etrailer again should the need arise.

by:

INSTALLED ON A CUSTOMER VEHICLE AND IT WORKED

by:

Parts arrived on the date scheduled, the shipper for some reason couldn't find an address that they had delivered to before, this was not any fault of etrailer.com.
All parts fit exactly as they should have and now hopefully I will not have to fix someone else's neglect again, as shown in some of my pics. But if I do I will use etrailer.com.
Big thanks to Shawn for help above and beyond.

by:

Every thing looks good!

by:

just as advertised,fast shipping

by:

Haven't tested yet but look great.

by:

Items were correct! Two boxes to ship the items. First box was damaged and required tape to keep the contents in tack. Second box was not damaged and contained two assembled backing plates. The right plate was missing parts (found in bottom of box) and the pin holding one of the shoes on was bent in two different directions. Had to straighten the pin in order to reassemble the plate and brakes.

by:

Item came in a timely manner

by:

Simply Awesome. Thank You!!!

by:

Parts were as ordered and fit great. Web site was easy to get around on!
