Roadmaster Tow Bar Base Plate - 711-4

  • Roadmaster
  • Removable Draw Bars
  • Hitch Pin Attachment

The crossbar-style hidden brackets attach to your vehicle's frame to provide attachment points for your tow bar. The visible portions of the brackets can be removed when you are not towing.

Features:

  • Hidden bracket design - drawbars are easily removable via 2 pins
    • Improved aesthetics compared with standard brackets
  • Computer-cut, all-steel construction provides exceptional strength
  • Black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant
  • Simple installation - no welding required
    • Custom base plates ensure a perfect fit for your vehicle
  • Compatible with Roadmaster tow bars with use of quick-disconnect crossbar (910021-00 - sold separately)
  • Instructions and mounting hardware included
  • Made in the USA
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty

The square drawbars, or front arms, on the crossbar-style base plate kit are simple to mount and remove, easily securing with hitch pins. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

1997 Ford Expedition

I used to tow our dinghy, a cherry 1997 Miata, with a car dolly; finally realized it was a case of overkill. The dolly is over half the weight of the car and wider than the motor home! On our last expedition to the Canadian Rockies, I got to talking with a fellow camper who told me how cool and easy it was to tow his dinghy with tow bars. Now, for the tow bar conversion:

Removing the Miata's fascia, radiator air scoop and bottom engine cover is not difficult, as the fasteners are relatively easy to get to. After removing (and discarding) the two tie-down loops and discarding the four screws holding the front anti-sway bar, the installation of the base plates is straight-forward (it fits into those holes - who knew?). The fit of the kit to the car's frame is precise, with plenty of adjustment space, if needed. The only fabrication required is removal of some material from the air scoop where it comes into contact with the installed base plates. Reinstalling the fascia, I "shoe-horned" it over the base plate, with the help of silicon spray. Fortunately, the fascia is very flexible. Unless you look for them, the base plate receivers are not a prominent feature of the front end.

1997 Mazda Miata

I just got done with the installation. Overall it was fairly straightforward, however it would have been nice if they had included pictures in the instructions. The larger bolts in the kit could have a more beveled tip like the factory bolts. This would make it much easier to get the bolts started in the holes. The photo attached is of the factory bolt for reference.

Shipping was very quick, only took a few days.

Price seems pretty high for these base plates. I purchased them for $360 and was even able to find a 5% off coupon online by using google.

Fairly easy self install. More finicky tow bar connection than blue ox but they don’t offer base for this car.

1995 Mazda Miata

Installed easily, pulls great with older hitch. Right side receiver is cocked some even though it is bolted tight against frame.must have slipped in jig while being welded.

Purchased for my 2003 Mazda Miata. So simple to tow behind my motorhome. I used a professional to install as I am not super handy. I think it took them a couple of hours to install and they did a great job. I feel very safe with this product and would highly recommend it.

Great! A hard to find product for a 2003 Mazda Miata. You guys had it in stock and got it to me in a timely manner.

Mazda Miata

These are good roadmaster base plates for a Miata. Two things. They should use larger cotter pins for securing the removable plates. I'd recommend replacing the ones included by roadmaster. Secondly, on at least a Miata, leave the base plates installed unless you are not going to use them for a long time. They are almost impossible to remove.

1997 Mazda Miata

The Roadmaster XL base plate kit fit my car very well and I didn't have to cut my front facia. It is a pretty simple installation compared to other make/models. We pulled the car a few thousand miles so far and it works great. Shipping was excellent from e-trailer. I would definitely buy from them again! Thanks

by:
1994 Mazda Miata

Nicely made parts. The bracket that that extends to the sway bar mount is welded a little close to one of the bolt holes. With the hex head bolts supplied i could barely get a socket on it.I wound up breaking one of the blind nuts inside of the frame loose, this was difficult to fix. I used 2 allen socket head bolts 10mmx1.25 to remedy the clearance problems. Maybe this will save someone else the same trouble.

2000 Mazda Miata

The brackets fit my 2000 Miata perfectly. Installation is easy and the bracket is well hidden.

I also bought an RM 038 adapter, which bolted right onto these bracket. That allowed me to fit my EAZ Aligner 2000 tow bar to the front of the Miata.

This works out beautifully, even for a 20-years-old EAZ Aligner 2000 tow bar.

Thanks

Well made parts, complete kit. But this isn't about Roadmaster as they did not treat me well in direct contact. This review is for Etrailer who served me perfectly. They had what I needed when nobody else did. They were a pleasure to deal with and shipped quickly (for free). For great result purchase from Dana at ext 371.

I was pulling my truck using the roadmaster crossbar and to my surpass the towbar broke in half as I was towing. Good thing I was in town only going 20 miles poer hr.

by:

etrailer service is and has always been stellar. My order was correct and was delivered very quickly. The only reason I made this a four instead of a five was that the rear bolt position of both base plate brackets where welded on crooked. Each small plate was at a different angle from each other. In my opinion whoever welded them wasn’t paying attention to quality control. Because I was on a time crunch for my departure on a trip and could not wait for replacements (and I needed the vehicle for local driving) I made the brackets work. Other than that the installation went smoothly and I was able to test tow my 2004 CRV a couple of times without incident.

  • What Parts And Accessories Do I Need To Flat-Tow 1990 Mazda Miata MX-5 Behind 2001 Winnebago Brave
To flat-tow your 1990 Mazda Miata MX-5 behind your 2001 Winnebago Brave, you will need base plates, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle wiring or lights, and a supplemental braking system. For a base plate kit, you will need Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, part # 711-4. The XL Base Plate Kit features removable draw bars, so when you are not towing your Miata, the base plate brackets are less visible. For a tow bar, I would recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520. The Falcon...

Roadmaster replacement crossbar/adapter # RM-025 will fit the XL base plates you have, # 711-4. The distance from the center between 1 set of tabs and the center of the other set is 30-5/8 inches.

For your Curt Tow Bar part # C19745 you can attach it to Blue Ox base plate kits with the adapter part # BX8833. There isn't a way to attach the Curt tow bar to Roadmaster base plates. The first item you will need to flat tow your 1991 Mazda Miata are base plates. We carry two different options of base plates for your vehicle. First are the XL Plates, # 711-4. These have removable drawbars held in place with a pin and clip. With the drawbars removed the base plates are virtually invisible. For these, trimming of the spoiler, air damn, grille, or plastic fascia may be required for installation. The other option are Standard Plates, # 711-2. These are fixed brackets and...

In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. • Is Installing Base Plate on a 1991 Mazda Miata for Flat Towing Difficult
You are correct in that base plate kit installs vary quite a bit from vehicle to vehicle. The # 711-2 which is a fit for your 1991 Mazda Miata is actually one of the easiest to install that I have ever seen. I attached a link to the install instructions for you to check out but basically you just hold them in place and run bolts through them to in place. The XL part # 711-4 is also a fit but requires an additional bracket but it still installs pretty easily.
