Base Plate Availability for a Mazda Miata
Question:
I plan to buy a used mazda mx5 miata, year 2000 or newer. For what years are baseplates available? My motorhome is an Airstream based in a Sprinter with a big, heavy trailer hitch? I know the cars ground clearance is low. What else do I need to know? I will check the towing capacity of the motorhome.

Base plates are available for the Mazda Miata all the way up to 2011, but the base plates are not the same between all model years. The Roadmaster XL base plate kit # 711-4 will fit the Miata from 1990 to 2005 excluding the Mazdaspeed. The Roadmaster EZ base plate kit # 52728-1 will fit all models from 2006 to 2011.
I have attached a link to our base plate fit guide for you to check out. Once you know the model year of your Miata, you can search our fit guide for the correct base plate kit, or you can send me the information and I would be happy to make some specific recommendations.
In addition to the base plates, there are 4 other basic components of flat towing, a tow bar, safety cables, tail light wiring and a supplemental braking system. I have attached several help articles that cover these different components and overviews of flat towing for you to check out.
Before flat towing, I strongly recommend checking the owners manual of the vehicle you plan to tow. Vehicle manufacturers will list any special restrictions or procedures for flat towing.
