Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Review

Colin: Hey everyone, it's Colin here at etrailer, and today we're going to take a look at Konig's line of XG12 pro self-tensioning snow tire chains. These come in a variety of sizes to fit your tire, so just make sure you enter your year, make model of vehicle in our fit guide and it'll guide you to the size that's going to correctly fit your tire. Now, if you live in an area where you're going to be frequently experiencing inclement weather, it's always a good idea to keep a set of chains inside your vehicle and just in case you find yourself in an emergency situation. What's great about our Konig XG12 pros is that these are going to give you great traction through snow and ice. They're going to be very easy to install and they have their own self-tensioning system.A lot of times for those ladder pattern chains or cable style chains, you have to get a rubber adjuster separately and you have to get one for each set of chains and they have to put that on just to make sure they stay snug on your tire. Not the case with our Konig chains right here. They have a built in right here with their color coded system.

This is going to help keep your chains snug against your tire while they're installed. What's great about our self-tensioning system is that it's built into the tire chain, so you don't have to worry about storing them separately. It's always going to be attached to the chain when you install them.If you have the ladder pattern chains with the rubber adjuster, you do run that risk of misplacing your rubber adjuster. If you have to go out and get your chains and then put them on your tire and you don't have your rubber adjuster, then it's not going to be snug against your tire, which could cause a lot of clinking around.Konig is well known for making a high quality chain. These have a manganese nickel alloy steel construction, and basically what that means is that they're going to be very tough and durable.

They're going to give you the traction that you need. They're going to resist rust and corrosion and hold up for a long time. Now, Konig designed these chains with a diamond pattern that's just going to give you more coverage around your tire and thus give you much better traction. Now, another thing it's going to do for you is it's going to give you a smoother ride. With those ladder pattern style chains, basically it just feels like you're going over a lot of little speed bumps.

Now, I want to point out you're still going to feel the diamond pattern chains on your tire while you're driving, but it's going to be a much smoother ride.We are going to have these double sided D shaped links. These are going to really dig into that snow and ice and give you the bite that you need to be able to pull through and stay on track. We're also going to have two steel plates on each set right here all throughout the tire, their position on the center of our tread. That's also going to help provide great traction. For any of that thicker ice that you might come across where the D shaped links can't get through, this is going to be there to break that up and give you traction. Now, no matter what set of chains you get, you do want to make sure you put them on the correct side of your vehicle.

If you have a rear wheel drive vehicle which will be more most trucks and SUVs, you're going to want to put them on the back tires. If you have a front wheel drive vehicle, which you'll find most sedans and a lot of crossover SUV have, then you're going to want to put them on the front tires. Now, if you have all wheel drive or four wheel drive and you want to have a set of tires, a set of chains for both tires, then just use the same partner that you got for your size tire. With your set of chains, you are going to get a bag full of these anti-scratch nylon bumpers. Right now is not really relevant to even put them on our chain. What they're for is if your chain happens to make contact with your wheel down here. If you have a taller wheel and a skinnier tire and the chain is rubbing up against him, then you're going to want to install these along the chain right here to make sure it doesn't scratch them up. It's very easy to install. We got one side with the stud, one side right here, just press it down until it clicks. Once you do that along the entire perimeter of the chain and it's going to make sure it doesn't harm or scratch the finish of your wheels. The chains are also going to be compatible with your ABS and traction control systems, so you won't have to worry about the chains messing those up while you're driving. The chains aren't going to have a maximum speed rating of 30 miles per hour, so just make sure you keep it slow out there. Now, what's nice is that we do have this durable case that's going to make for a very easy storage. It's kind of an upgrade from some other chains out there that just come in a cheap bag or sack that can tear up very easy, or even if the chains themselves can tear up while they're in storage. This is going to be very durable, keep your chains safe and it's also compact so it'll fit under a seat or in your trunk, wherevers convenient for you. Now, I'll go ahead and open up the case for you so you can see the inside. See, we do have our other chain right here. We're also going to have a bag with a set of instructions. There will also be a set of gloves and a kneeling mat just so you don't have to directly kneel into the snow. When you first get your center chains, I would recommend going ahead and install them on your tire, whether it's in your driveway or in your garage just before you go out into any increment weather. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, you're going to know exactly what to do. We'll go ahead and walk you through the install right now. It's going to be the same for every size chain. Now, the first thing you want to do is lay out your chains flat and just make sure there's no kinks or twists in the chain and also make sure that there's no broken links. You also want to make sure you lay them down the correct way. Right here you can see we have this hook right here with the two little prongs. You want to make sure that's facing down on the ground right now so that when we install the chains, the flat part right here will be rubbing against the tire. Now, right here between our gray cable and our red channel, this is kind of going to be the halfway point of our chain. When we're installing them, this side is going to go on one side of the tire and this side is going to go on the other side. What we're going to do is go ahead and slide these behind our tire until we get to the halfway point, and then line up the chains with the bottom of our tire. Now, what's great is that from here we're not going to have to make any connections on the backside of our tire, so we don't have to lay in the snow at all. From here, all we have to do is grab ahold of both sides of the cable. Then, we're going to bring it up behind our tire, and then we'll make our connection right there. This cable, it's going to stay behind the tire. From here, we'll grab ahold of our chains, drape it over the top insides of our tire. From here, we're going to use those color coded connection points they have, take that red link and put it on the hook just like that. Just make sure everything is even throughout the installation process. Now, we're going to come down here and get our self-tensioning system in place. What we'll do is take our red channel and our gray cable and run it through just like that, and we're going to pull up on it as tight as we can get it.Now, we're going to come up here to this plastic case where it says Konig, grab ahold of the red hook right here, pull down, and connect it to our cable. Now from here, you're all done with this tire. Just go ahead and repeat this process on the other side. If you notice that entire time I was wearing these gloves just to show you guys it's just as easy to install them if you have gloves on.Well, I appreciate you all for watching and I hope this information helped you out, but that's going to do it for our look at Konig's line of XG12 snow tire chains.

Fairly easy to get on and off as far as chains go. I use them on my Mercedes Metris van. Got me through some snowstorms just fine. They don’t rub anywhere and they stay tight.

Having never put chains on any vehicle ever, opening the plastic carrying case and seeing inside was a little intimidating. I thought for sure I would be all tangled up in these things and it was very cold! However, the instructions where just a couple of very basic/simple drawings with no text. So, I pushed forward and installation was indeed simple. Connection point were easy identified by the red paint. Which is great because I kneeling on my very cold snow packed, gravel driveway and people were waiting for me to come plow them out. Once installed, they performed extremely well. I used them to help me clear a neighbor's small, but uphill driveway with my Sport Plow. They were also very impressed.

Great Quality. Quick Installation and very easy to take off. Self-tensioning worked like a charm. I would definitely recommend them.

I bought these to use on my 2023 Rav4 TRD Off-Road OEM Falken AT Tires.

I highly recommend installing them at home a few times before heading up. Watching the etrailer videos on YouTube was also a huge help.

Good quality chains comes in a nice plastic storage box
Easy to put on I did a test run

by:

I was looking to have snow tire chains for my upcoming trip to northern Wisconsin. I found these to be very easy to install as the instructions were very clear. I like that they come with a case to make them easy to store in my Ford Escape.

by:

Previously my only experience with chains was using cable chains on front wheel drive cars, where turning the wheels was necessary to ensure they had a good fit.

I bought these chains for my 2023 Kia EV6 with stock 235/55/19 tires. The instruction manual for the car says to put chains on the rear wheels and I was worried that getting chains on the rear wheels would be difficult. Despite never having used this style of chains before I was easily able to test-fit both chains with 15 minutes, and the chains fit very snuggly and didn't move when I move the car a cars length. Getting the inner loop positioned right is something that took a couple tries to get right, and I'm sure there might be a bit more room for improvement :)

I was slightly concerned about the chains damaging the rims or other parts of the car, but with the included spacers (not applied in the picture) I think this won't be a problem.

I'm taking the car up to the snow this weekend and if I use the chains I'll provide an update.

etrailer did a great job clearly communicating to me when my chains would arrive with no fuss.

by:

Used them extensively in 12-15 inch snow on a BMW X5 and they were absolutely great. Easy to place. Effective at delivering superb traction and always stayed in place on the tire.

by:

Having wrestled with chains for going over passes growing up in Montana, these are like "night and day" getting them on and off a vehicle!! No loose chain link ends to beat up your fenders, don't have to roll the tires to fasten them up, and self tighten on their own. Work great!!

by:

I hesitate a bit to leave this review, because it's based on very limited experience. I recently moved into the Smoky Mountain foothills, don't have a 4X4, and last winter a couple times was stuck not being able to make it up my steep, narrow driveway after a snow. So, I purchased these tire chains. I did a couple dry-run installs/removals and was very pleased with the ease of installation, the self-adjusters worked great, etc. However, I've never actually had to drive in the snow with the chains installed, so, as I said, my rating is based on limited product experience, so anyone reading this, please take that into consideration.

by:

These tire chains have been wonderful. They are easy to put on and even easier to take off. I use them on a very icy steep gravel driveway (more than a half mile in length). They provide excellent traction and break up the ice so I can use my other vehicles on the driveway. I like these so much that I purchased them for two other vehicles.

by:

Bought these to go with our 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. We're often in Utah during the Winter and have already put them to use. They were so easy to put on all by myself. Great design and gave us all the traction we needed to climb a snowy steep mountainside.

by:

I purchase the chains for when I go to Colorado. Driving thru Wyoming they required chains when going over some of the mountains passes. I like the how easy they are to put on and take off.

by:

I have a 2019 Honda CRV and have never owned tire chains before so I dont have anything to compare these to but they are easy to put on and take off and they conquer a steep icy unpaved drive way in The Catskills perfectly. There are some plastic parts that probably should be metal. One of them - the tension hook - broke on one of my chains (see photo) and when I reported this to etrailer.com with a photo to prove it, they sent another set. So I am pleased overall with the service from etrailer.com but am only giving 4 stars for the product on account of the breakage. Also they rusted after one season but that hasn't impacted performance.

by:

Konig are the BEST chains you can buy (in my not-so-humble opinion) - and the Customer Service by etrailer is as good as it gets... THANK YOU Quinn !

by:

I love this chains, there ridiculously easy to install compared to other chains and cables. Once there on they are on and you don't have to worry about anything loosening and flying off while your driving. I live in Oregon we get snow quite often and it's nice to be able to just throw these on and forget about the icy roads

by:

Easy to put on and take off. Love the hard plastic container with velcro on one side- makes storing convenient. A bit pricey but these are high quality chains so worth the $.

by:

I live in Texas, so these were totally new to me. I didn't know the first thing about snow chains. I did my research and decided I wanted the easiest type to put on and take off. I also wanted some heavy duty ones as I didn't want them falling apart if I needed them in my first trip to Colorado. When they came in, I practiced putting them on and taking them off. This was so simple to do that I was confident of my being able to do that. They were also heavy duty. I'm glad I got these.

by:

Outstanding service! With an upcoming trip and recent snow storm etrailer helped me get my snow chains just in time for our vacation. Without the chains I would have been screwed. Communication with this company is impressive. The original chains I ordered would not have arrived in time and the sales team called me right away to find alternative solutions. Chains for 315/35/20 size tires are not easy to find. Really happy with my purchase. Thank you.

by:

Based on installation, five stars. They can be passed between the gap on dual rear wheels, although it is tricky. Have not used them in a snow/ice situation yet and hopefully will never have to do so with my Winnebago View 24D.

by:

I'll be honest, you don't need tire chains until you need tire chains and I have yet to use them. I do feel good knowing they are in my van and that I will be getting up my driveway if the weather gets bad at work. I really like the design.
