Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig CB-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, youll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the chains.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip and tug it until it's tight.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Feed the tensioning chain through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire.

6. Drive forward around 325' (about the length of a football field) and stop. Check the chains and tighten them as needed.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Snow tire chains look great.
But storage
hard case was damaged with broken chips of plastic. Maybe better shipping packaging is required.

We have not actually used the Konig tire chains we purchased (due to the sudden cancellation of our snow trip), but we were very impressed by the customer service folks at etrailer.com. It was a rush order, and delivery was smooth and timely. Also, the product information on the website was very helpful.

2007 Toyota Prius

Ordered these chains from etrailer.com for my 2007 Prius. First order from this company. Got a heads up call from Preston at etrailer saying there might be delay in shipping ( there wasn’t). Then followed up with call saying they had shipped. Company is obviously ‘customer satisfaction’ focused. Based on my experience with this one order from etrailer I would highly recommend it. Haven’t had to use the chains yet but I know they are quality (Thule) and will work.

I had never heard of ETrailer before I began searching for the Konig snow chains that I wanted. Lower price on a site worries me and usually means you won’t get your order in time or possibly ever. The morning after I order I got an email updating me that the MFG had delayed their order. No big deal because I’m not in a hurry but I replied to the email for the heck of it. I was pleasantly surprised that a person replied to my reply who apologized again that there would be a delay. I continued to get updates from real people daily and throughout the packing and shipping of my chains. I’m by nature suspicious and don't trust a lot of online stores. For instance, the same night that I ordered from ETrailer I ordered Xmas gift from Wilson sports. I could never checked the status of my shipment on their site and when I asked for the status of my shipment I got an automated reply. I received my snow chains and am still waiting for my football and receiver gloves. I have no idea when they’ll show up. ETrailer is run the way a company should be run. I will always search ETrailer to see if they have anything that I need and have already told all of my friends about this company. Thank you ETrailer employees George J., Justin W. and all of employees that handled my order and got my order to me within 10 calendar days. Awesome service!

2010 Toyota Prius

I bought these chains for emergency purposes to prepare for a trip from North Dakota to Washington in late November. I haven't had to use them yet so can only comment on the product purchase, service, and price. The service was good, they were delivered quickly and on the date they estimated. I did a lot of research before purchasing these for my low wheel well clearance 2010 Prius. They were a nice compromise between the inexpensive and expensive ones. In addition to the S rating for low wheel well clearance, the link shape are supposed to have a smoother ride, there is some assistance with installation, and reviews were selling points. Note that the kneeling pad and gloves are both thinner plastic. Not exactly what I expected but better than nothing. They came in a nice easy carrying case.

2015 Toyota Corolla

I bought these same brand chains two years ago for my Corolla. These chains have worked extremely good for me on the steep icy highway during a really heavy snow storm. Other cars with the typical cable chains were sliding all over the place, but our car made it through without sliding. I was more worried about the other cars sliding into me, than about my car making it through. The highway was eventually closed down about 5-10 minutes after us getting through. For light snow or almost bare pavement with patches of snow these chains are sort of over kill. I have used them maybe 10 to 15 times but on my last trip one of the chains broke. I believe the ball broke off from the inside hook of the chain. I would prefer if the inner attachment was more like a hook (like they typically use on ladder chains) which I think would be more robust. I have had a number of balls breaking off on my ladder type chains, so to me it seems like that is the weak link in this chain design. Installation is pretty easy but that rubber hook at the end is also hard to install in the cold. Also getting the chains off after that terrible snow storm was difficult. The inner ball/hook was completely frozen together. So be sure to have something in the car to chip the ice away if needed. On warmer, less severe days it isn't a problem. Overall they are a great chain to carry with me for those ski trips.

2018 Toyota Prius

It's only October in New York. It's a little early to review the effectiveness of the snow chains. They look good, come in a useful compact hard plastic case, and I expect them to keep my car safe this winter, and many other winters. Thank you.

Toyota Prius

After a couple installs, I'm able to get these chains on/off my Prius in just a few minutes. I live at the top a steep gravel road in the mountains and on snowy/icy days, my car does better than any other 4x4 in the neighborhood.

I don't think i'm going to have to worry about getting stuck in the snow anymore. These chains are nothing like the old timey ones my dad and father in-law had to play around with. Thanks for the fast service.

These chains really worked on slicked down snow and ice! Would definitely recommend if you're not going to get winter tires.

It shipped way ahead of schedule, and I was very satisfied with that. The instructions could have been better on how to assemble the chains. It took me a while to get them on.

I havent tried the product yet. Its a xmas gift. However the ordering process was easy mostly because etrailer was very attentive to my needs. They answered my calls and shipped rapidly with great follow up.

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2003 Subaru Outback
I spoke with my contact at Thule and he said that they have test fitted all their snow chains on 2003 Subaru Outbacks and found there were no clearance issues with any of their chains. A good choice for your vehicle would be the Thule CB12 snow tire chains # TH01221080. These chains will fit most Subaru Outback tire sizes, they are fairly easy to install and easy on the pocketbook. They are made with a manganese steel construction that will last longer than other less expensive chains....

If you were only planning on buying one set of chains, use them on the rear wheels. Before purchasing tire chains, consult your owners manual for any...
