    Those are good questions, and you will indeed lose quite a bit of functionality going with a fixed rack system compared to a track mounted rack. The reason for that is simply that you'll have the ability to move the crossbars to accommodate whatever it is you need to carry, and depending on what that accessory may be, it won't be able to mount unless your crossbars have a specific spread distance. There is not a desired optimum spacing, that is completely up to you and what you are looking...

    Rhino-Rack RFMPC Roof Rack Legs - Fixed Mount - 2" Tall - Qty 2 Item # RFMPC2 is actually just the feet and not the bars. The bars come in various lengths: 44", 50", 54", 59", 65", 71", and 78". I have included a link to the bar options below. A pair of these bars is generally rated for 165 pounds. So if we take that and divide by 4 (1 for each foot) the capacity per foot is 41.25 pounds. However, the legs # RFMPC2 don't have an official capacity.
