Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold and some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143754 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins plug in, simply vehicle wiring harness with the 4-way flat trailer connector. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2014-2017 Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback. And on a custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide. Put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show you if it'll fit for your application. Now this part will provide this 4-way flat trailer connector to back your vehicle, to power your trailer signal lights. It is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, 7-pole adapters that we do sell separately on our website.

Does connect very quickly and easily. Basically, just locate your connection points, which are in the rear cargo area. Plug in these connectors, one on the driver side, one on the passenger side. Ground your white wire, then run your power wire to your vehicle's battery.Does include this taillight converter box here to ensure that your vehicle wiring will match that of your trailer. It is a power module box, so it connects directly to the battery, to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system.

They do use protective connection terminals to resist corrosion. Does come with this nice dust cap for your 4-way flat connector. So, basically when you're not plugged into a trailer, you can just put this dust cap onto your 4-way, and that'll protect the terminals from any damage, or from the elements.Comes with some cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring. Even contains this nice terminal grease packet to put on all your electrical connections when you make them. A few specs on this harness.

The maximum amperage for the stop and turn light circuit, is three amps per circuit. For the taillights, it's six amps per circuit. Does come with a nice set of instructions on how to install all this. But just quickly how you would install this again, is you go to the rear of the vehicle, in the rear cargo area, behind the taillights. You want to start on the driver side, you'll take this connector right here, and plug your harness, plug this into the harness, and behind the taillight. And the driver side will be the yellow wire, so the one with the yellow wire would go for your driver side.

The length of green wire is for your passenger side. So same way, you'll run this wire over to the passenger side, plug this in again, behind the taillight. Those connectors are ready to go.Your module box here, you do want to attach that to a flat surface so it doesn't bounce around. They do give you some extra cable ties for that. Your white wire with the eyelet on it, you need to connect that to a good, clean ground if there's one nearby. If not, they do include a grounding screw. And then your last wire, you run this wire, of course, the 4-way out the back towards your trailer. And your last wire would be this red power wire. This needs to go to your vehicle's battery, at the front of the vehicle. So they give you this extra length of wire to do that. Connect that end in the butt connector there. Run this to the front, and you don't want to run this directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder. So once you get up to the front, connect it to this side of the fuse holder, and this eyelet is what'll connect to your vehicle's battery.Once it's all connected, pop open the fuse holder, take the included 15 amp fuse, install it in your fuse holder. Put the cap back on it, and your system's all ready to go. And again, they do give you some extra cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring. But that should do it for the review on the Hopkins plugin, simple vehicle wiring harness, with the 4-way flat trailer connector.
