Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the jack storage cover and some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11140235 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins Plug-in Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four way flat trailer connector. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 1999 to 2005 Mazda MX-5 or the 2000 to 2006 Mazda MPV Van. On a custom fit part I always like to recommend to go to our website, use our Fit Guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it will show you if this will work for your application. This harness will provide this four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five pull, six pull and seven pull adapters that we do sell separately. This whole unit will connect very quickly, easily.

There's no cutting or splicing of wires. Basically just locate your connection points, which will be in the rear cargo area behind the taillights. You just plug in these connectors, one on each side. One on the driver's side, one on the passenger side. Ground your white wire and then run your power wire to your vehicle's battery and you'll be all ready to go. It does include this taillight converter, this black box right here. This is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer.

This is a power module so it is designed to connect directly to the battery, and that's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. The connectors on this have a protective connection terminal on them to help them resist corrosion. It does come with this nice dust cover for the four way. What you can do is take that dust cap, attach it to the four way plug and you can actually leave it on there if you like. When you're not plugged into your trailer, you just put your cap over the terminals and it will protect them from any damage or from the elements. It comes with everything here on the table, a nice set of detailed instructions on how to install everything.

It's pretty simple. Basically what you'll want to do is start at the rear cargo area and then access to behind your taillights. You'll start on the driver's side and you'll take your connector that has the yellow wire in it, that's for the driver's side. You'll unplug the harness from the taillights, plug this in between them. Then you'll go to the passenger side and take this connector that has the long length of green wire.

That's for the passenger side. You'll run this wire all the way over to the passenger side and do the same connect your connector behind the taillights. Once those are all connected, your converter box you want to attach to a nice flat surface so it doesn't bounce around. They give you a few extra cable ties to attach that down to a flat surface. Then you have two wires here that need to be connected. Again, the white wire is the ground wire. It has an islet on it so if there's a nearby ground you can connect it to that. If there isn't they do offer a grounding screw that you can make your own ground. The power wire has the butt connector on it. That has to run to your vehicle's battery, so they do give you this extra length of wire to run it up to your vehicle's battery. You'll just connect one end of the length of wire to the power wire, run that to the front. Once you get to the front you don't want to connect this directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder. You take the fuse holder, take the side that has the butt connector on it and make your connection. Then the other side of the fuse holder will have an islet and that's for connecting to your battery. Once you get it all connected, pop open the fuse holder. Comes with an included 20 amp fuse. Then just put this into the fuse holder, put your cap over to protect it and you'll be all ready to go. As we mentioned it does give you some extra cable ties to even help take up any slack in the wiring, and also a nice packet of terminal grease or dielectric grease. That's handy because you do want to use that on all your electrical connections. Before you plug these into your connectors, put some grease on them. Same way on the four way, put some grease on that so when you plug it into your trailer that grease will help resist any corrosion in your electrical connections. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins Plug-in Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four way flat trailer connector.

Easy install, works well. My vehicle has a 12v power outlet in back, used power from that with a plug instead of the hassle or running a wire to the battery. When pulling my little utility trailer I just plug that in to power the trailer light setup

We always recommend to wire the harness to the battery and not the 12V power outlet in the back because it puts an extra load on the OEM wiring which could damage it over time.

1999 Mazda Miata - I wanted to submit a review after the purchase, but I failed to click correctly. This was my third purchase from etrailer.com, and Ive been very satisfied with every product that theyve sold me. As for the 99 Miata wiring harness, it was a thorough kit, easy to install with clear directions, and worked fine every time I towed my tire trailer. Great company to do business with.
