Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the floor molding and some interior paneling to access this harness.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2001 Toyota RAV4 33465

Today we are going to install part number 33465 from Hoppy, and we are going to install it on a 2001 Toyota RAV4. All right, to begin with we need to get inside the vehicle and we need to take off the plastic panels on the inside. I am going to take up this carpet and this panel also. We will just push that back for now. And this trim panel, it comes off also. And the next thing we need to do is take off this panel here. We need to loosen it so we can get behind the tail light assembly. We will take off this screw here, and then we will undo this screw here to take off this buckle so that gives you easier work room to pull off the plastic. Also, behind this panel there might be a screw that you might need to take out too. We will take off this panel here for a little bit extra room, too.

Also, behind this panel there might be a screw that you might need to take out too. We will take off this panel here for a little bit extra room, too.

On the passenger side you pull away the plastic, just like you did on the drivers side. Again, this is essentially the same. However, we also pulled off this panel here because we are going to need access to that to run our wires through. And again, the same thing applies. The connection point is back up here behind this panel. First we will run this through. And also the reason we have this open is so we can help pull it through, and also we will be using it when it is permanently installed and you will be pulling this wire out to use it by the hitch. For now, we will just leave it like that, and then we will go ahead and run this wire back up through here. Again, we have disconnected our wire harness here. It comes apart. Push the T-connector back into place, and then you can start reassembling your panels. And also make sure you have your carpet put back, too. What we can do with the yellow wire is simply just go ahead and tuck it underneath the carpet here, as best we can. Then we will put our plastic trim piece right back over it.

Next we will go over how you use a T-1 harness. It is pretty simple. Again, when you are not using it, it actually gets hidden up here and it stays out of the way when you are not using it. When you do need to use it, just pull it loose, pull the cable out - the box can stay in there, it will be just fine. And you can put your lid back on, pull it out and pull it across the threshold here. And you can see it goes over the rubber weatherstripping here, and it easily comes out by your hitch. And you can shut the door on it, it is not going to hurt a thing. And with the door shut you can see you can actually pull out as you need to meet your trailer. All right, that covers our install of part number 33465 from Hoppy on an 2001 Toyota RAV4.

Not sure about "Hoppy" but this is Hopkins item #43465
This T connector is a simple product to connect, but installation in the Toyota Rav4 is not the easiest. This item does not have a ground wire, I do not know if it is required.

The installation video is a great start, but it's missing some important points:
- BEFORE you try to pop up the side trim pieces you need to remove the easily-overlooked rear-most screw above the access panels
- Each tail-light harness is held in place. The Driver side has a rectangular plastic piece you have to push out to free the harness, and the passenger side has little wings. You can slide the harness downward and toward the front of the vehicle, or you can pry them out to pull the harness loose.
- Note on the passenger side there are two harnesses side-by-side. If you look carefully you'll see one is much bigger (and therefore not the one you want)
- After installing both T connectors, pull the slack out of the yellow wire to the passenger side
- An alternate installation of the 4-flat connector is to run it under the carpet and through a T slit in the rubber gasket, then put a wiring box on the hitch.
- I used a pair of wire cutters to pop out the plastic connectors (about half remained stuck in the hole)

Great product, easy install, best price i could find locally and on the web. Instructions with box were good and etrailer also had video link for my specific vehicle. Relatively quick shipping (had to come to Canada). Will definitely buy from here again the next time I need stuff like this!

This trailer connecter is a very clean install. I'm sure you could buy the diodes and do this cheaper, but you're paying for the convenience of the factory connectors and the clean look. It's definitely money well spent and works great.

  • Tips for Routing an Amp Power Wire to a Vehicle Battery
There are a few different ways that you can route a power wire from one place a vehicle to the vehicle battery. I have included a link to an article with tips on routing power wires that you may find helpful. Basically there are 3 ways that you can run a wire: completely outside of the vehicle with the wire exposed; inside the frame on vehicles that have openings in the frame, and finally through the vehicle. Running it through the vehicle protects the wire the best though you usually...

  • Ground or No Ground for Installing a 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2004 Toyota Rav4
You are correct the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, item # 118389, has a ground wire that is attached to a ground location behind the vehicle tail light and the Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, item # 33465, does not have an extra ground wire. Both harnesses will work properly on your vehicle. I would select the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, item # 118389, because of the extra ground protection it offers. If there is a short circuit situation on the trailer the Tow Ready...

Hopkins trailer wiring harness # 33465 fits all models of the 2001 to 2005 Toyota RAV4. That would include 4 and 6 cylinder models. You could also use # 118389 or # C55307. • Should 4-Pole Wiring Harness Be Kept Inside Vehicle When Not in Use
Unless you tow almost every day I recommend keeping your 4-pole trailer connector inside the vehicle where it is protected from corrosion and damage. Many wiring issues can arise from corrosion and so it is best to save yourself that potential hassle by keeping the harness out of harm's way as much as possible. The various harnesses for your RAV4, Curt harness # C55307, Tekonsha # 118389 and Hopkins # 33465, all have a protective cover for their 4-pole plug, but I still recommend keeping...
