Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in the rear cargo area. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings, ceiling light, ceiling panel, side trim panels, and side access panels to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

2014 Ford Flex

Haven't turned it on yet, but completing installation. Looks like good quality, and instructions are decent, including pictures. However, the instructions incorrectly state both side trim panels should be removed. Only the driver's side needs to be removed, to route the T connectors to the ceiling light. The lower portion of trim that extends along the luggage area does not need to be removed. Pop the rear end out of a few hidden fasteners, and flex it to slip the T connectors under it and upwards. The only significant issue I found for a "custom" fit, is the ground wire needs to be 2' longer to reach the ground point in the rear of the spare tire area. There is no ground screw in the driver's side tailight area, and I was unwilling to drill a hole in metal without knowing what is on the other side. Do NOT use a nut on one of the mounting screws of the tailight - they are not ground. I had to splice a 2' piece of wire into the ground wire (not supplied). Assuming this works as intended I will be very happy.

2013 Volvo XC70

The wiring harness went on the Volvo XC70 without a problem. It took about 2.5 hours to finish the job. One has to remove all the trim and floor from the rear of the station wagon. The ''plug and pray'' wire set came with good, understandable instructions. [prayers were answered''.
I would have attached a short video clip od 4 way flashers in action but a screen shot will have to do.... Thanks JOHN

2010 Volvo XC70

Replaced Trailer lighting unit in 2010 Volvo XC70. Dealer could not fix. .. Wiring kit designed to be an easy installation or replacement of Trailer wiring. The biggest effort is gaining access to each connection of the brake & tail light wires. Once each connector is located, disconnect plastic connector, insert trailer in/out connector pairs, route wires to each location. .. then, to power and ground the electronic box I used existing power wire and ground location. Be prepared to connect into existing wires with connecting clips. I purchased extra connection clips not supplied (Find at auto supply with trailer lights). New System Works great with LED or incandescent lights.

Perfect fit for my Volvo

2004 BMW X3

Fairly easy to install. Connectors fit well and are good quality. The first one I got had the wrong harness in the package. The second was missing a sheet of instructions. So open it ahead of time to make sure all is good. The instructions were close. I needed an 8 mm instead of 10 and removing the side screws and floor covering was unnecessary extra work. There’s a fuse box in the rear with an empty spot for the factory trailer harness so it’s easy to tap power there.

Ford Escape

Only thought was the instructions seemed to be for a Ford Escape.

by:

It really can't be any easier, just plug and play. The hardest part was running the power wire under and through rocker panels from the battery to the back of the car. It's one wire and NOT difficult just a little time consuming, the rest is unplug and plug back in.

by:

Simple installation, directions are great. Hardest part was running the one wire to the battery. Otherwise it was a breeze!

Great instructions, easy to follow and install

  • Comparing Curt And Hopkins Wiring Harnesses For 2011 Volvo XC70
Trailer wiring harnesses for your 2011 Volvo XC70 use powered converters to draw the power for the trailer's wiring. This prevents the taillights of your Volvo from having to power the trailer wiring. The Hopkins kit part # HM11143735 that fits your vehicle runs a line to the positive post of the vehicle whereas the Curt part # C56386 instead runs to the interior light. This is HIGHLY unusual but it is what Curt recommends. So you either would need to run a wire to the battery or to the...

  • Comparison Of Trailer Hitches For 2008 Volvo XC70
The Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75916 are made by the same parent company so they are really constructed the same. They are Class lll hitches and have 2 inch receiver openings, and will work well with your XC70. The Hidden Hitch is no longer available. If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch...

  • No Brake Lights on Trailer After Installing Curt T-Connector on 2016 Volvo XC70
If your trailer doesn't have brake lights but does have turn signals, the most likely thing I can think of that may be the issue with the Curt # C56386 is the that the trailer has separate turn and brake lights. If it does, that would mean it is on a 3-wire system where the turn signals and brake lights are not on the same circuit. If that's the case what you would need is a converter for the trailer, the Curt # C56196 (note this is not compatible with LED lights).

  • No Brake Lights with Hopkins Plug-In Harness On a 2013 Volvo XC70
There are two different sets of tail lights on a 2013 Volvo XC70, a pair in the quarter panel at chest height and a pair in the lower bumper at knee height. I took a look at all the trailer wiring harnesses for a 2013 Volvo XC70 (Curt T-Connector part # C56386, Tekonsha T-One part # 118774, and Hopkins Plug-In part # HM11143735) and these all show the connectors plugging into the tail lights at chest height (see photo). It sounds like you may somehow have them plugged into the tail lights...

  • Does 2009 Volvo XC70 Need to Be Reprogrammed to Install Curt C56386 T-Connector
Other than needing to run the power supply wire to the positive battery terminal, installing the # C56386 T-Connector on your 2009 Volvo XC70 would be a plug and play installation. The converter would plug inline with the factory wiring harness as shown in the linked instructions. No reprogramming or software will be necessary. • Troubleshooting Install of Curt Trailer Wiring on 2016 Volvo XC70 Interior Light Stays On
Most likely a pin in one of the connectors of the Curt trailer wiring harness # C56386 isn't seated properly and your interior light is somehow shorting to a circuit with power all the time which is causing it to be on all the time. Try removing the harness to first see if the problem goes away and then from there reinstall it to see if reconnecting the connectors causes the pins to seat better and the problem to go away. If the problem persists than the harness itself is damaged and...

  • Wiring Harness for 2016 Volvo XC70 and Running a Wire to the Battery
On your 2016 Volvo XC70, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # C56386 has a wire that runs to the battery for two reasons. The first and main reason is that there is no other source of constant 12v power in the rear of your Volvo. The second is that the powered converter that comes with the wiring harness is designed to reduce strain on your wiring system. This requires it to have a direct power source. If you were to tap into another circuit...

  • Recommended Hitch for a 2012 Volvo XC70
Yes, we do. To add a 2" hitch to your 2012 Volvo XC70, I recommend the etrailer Hitch item # e77KR. This hitch is custom fit and bolts to your Volvo with included hardware. This is a class III hitch with a 2" receiver. It has a 350 lbs maximum tongue weight so you will have plenty of capacity for a bike rack. I really like this hitch because the crosstube mounts behind the rear bumper. This not only looks better but it also helps with ground clearance. If you are planning on towing you...

The Curt # C56386 also carries over from the 2015 to the 2016 model, so it will fit your vehicle regardless of whether or not it's considered a 2015 or a 2016 model. I've confirmed this with Curt.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2013 Volvo XC70 Wagon
To be honest I recommend installing a Class lll trailer hitch on your XC70 like the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch, part # 75916. This hitch has a 2-inch receiver opening which gives you many more options for accessories than a Class ll hitch like part # C12066. If you are going to install the # C12066, per Curt you are required to use a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 for any non-trailer items. Since you mentioned a ball mount I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900....

  • Does Curt Trailer Wiring Have to be Powered by 2010 Volvo XC70 Battery
To install the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56386 power you really need to run that wire up to the battery on your 2010 Volvo XC70. Any other circuit on your vehicle (like the cigarette lighter) won't have a high enough amperage rating to handle the lights on your trailer. You could potentially get away with using a different circuit on your vehicle for power but then you risk blowing that circuit which would result in power loss on your vehicle as well as the lights on your...
