Installation
This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear scuff panel and then remove the tail light housings to access these connection points. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.
A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.
Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

So today I received my wiring harness in the mail and decided to wire it up to my 2014 subaru crosstrek hybrid touring. I know subaru says (even at my dealership) the hybrids are rated to tow but, I know one other person who tows light loads with their crosstrek hybrid for a couple years now and with no issues at all. I never really thought of towing with mine until recently when I was given a Clam portable ice fishing house. The house wouldn't fit in my car, I decided to look into roof racks but the thought of lifting the thing on top my car was not settling well with me. I decided that a small trailer (which I already have) was the best route for me. Which brings me to present day today. I now have a light tow package on my car capable of towing my trailer and fish house for the winter. So now for the product, overall it was extremely easy to install on my car. The wiring instructions I would like to note only show you how to connect the driver side tail light harness to the vehicle, just pay attention to which harness goes on which side in the instructions and you shouldn't have a problem. I like how it plugs directly into the existing harness in the vehicle. The only thing I found that would require some thinking is how to run the hot wire to the front of your car to connect to the positive terminal. I would submit pictures but I hid my wiring in the guards underneath my car. I also tucked away the wiring and converter pack thing in the truck of my car. Also, when running the trailer connector end and hot lead wire I ran them through the truck to the outside of my vehicle through some grommets to prevent weather getting through and hold them in place. Lastly, of course I tested it on my trailer and everything works great. Now I have to sit and wait til ice fishing season to actually tow my fish house. I would definitely recommend this to another crosstrek hybrid owner looking to tow light loads.
We installed on a Subaru XV Hybrid with good result. Harness quality is very good, instructions are clear except for 12volt power. Used fish wire from hitch to pull T-connectors up to tail light holes without removing side panels. Mounted electronic modular to back wall of trunk. Removed negative from both batteries to be sure but ran 12volt power to driver side battery. For 12v I went thru grommet in truck under center of rear diff and then along driver side edge under plastic shield as much as possible. I wish instructions gave some suggestion on how to run 12v.

Hitch and wiring have worked out well. I use the trailer about once everytwo weeks and no problems.
Wow. I'm amazed. After spending 11 (yes, not a typo) hoursa at U-Haul and repeatedly asking why they were having so much trouble installing a wiring harness in my Crosstrek Hybrid, I finally asked to see the package. It said EXCLUDING HYBRID!
I hate working on electrical on my vehicles because I'm afraid I'm going to do something horribly wrong and the car will be stranded somewhere far from home. My son and I sat down with the kit, followed the instructions carefully, and BOOM! It works perfectly!
No troubles at all and we were towing a trailer where everything worked properly the very next day. Thank you etrailer! Amazing!
