Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the floor coverings, the scuff panel, and the the driver's-side trim panel to access this harness. Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage

Rob: Hey everybody. Rob here at etrailer.com and today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness on a 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage. Now our Curt harness is going to provide us with a four-pole flat trailer connector so we have all the required lights to get down the road safely with the trailer. Like our taillights, our turn signals and our brake lights. Now what I really like about this wiring, not only are they going to give you a dust cover to protect the connector, keep all that dirt debris and anything out, but it's going to be on the inside of the vehicle until we're ready to use it. You can see you have it dropped out the back of the hatch so we can use the wiring or whenever we want to store it and we're not using it, we can simply store it inside by our spare tire. Now I know a lot of customers don't like the idea that purely because the wires sitting on the back here and you're closing the hatch.

But so long as you're not at the latch mechanism itself, it's perfectly fine because the weatherstripping here is going to provide enough cushion and give to where the wire's not going to get pinched. Another nice thing about our wiring is that it has a converter box. And what that's going to do is it's going to take the signal from our taillights and transfer it to a working signal for our trailer, but it's also going to protect our Mirage. In case there was a problem on the trailer where we have a short circuit, we don't have to worry about any kind of back feeding or damage happening to our Mirage because that converter box is going to protect it.Now, I do know that a lot of people are kind of nervous when it comes to wiring because they don't want to start cutting into any wires or doing any kind of thing like that to their car. But fortunately this is a completely plug and play installation.

There's no cutting or splicing into any wires. It's just going to use a simple T-connector behind the tail lights to plug in line with the taillights and get the signals. In fact, you're really only going to need about a flathead screwdriver or maybe a trim panel tool to get the entire job done. Let's go and do that process together now. To begin our installation, we want to open up the rear hatch on our Mirage.

Now right here at the very back we're going to have this threshold panel. Now it's going to come up pretty easy. We just want to grab the bottom of it and lift straight up. Probably it'll be easier if you start on the side, kind of work your way across, kind of pull outward at the edge and then lift up and we'll set this aside. Now, if you did have these clips that got stuck in there, that's okay, but we do want to remove them before we put the panel back in place. So you can get yourself a trim panel tool.

Just want to pull that out and then if you flip your cover over, you'll see the little notch that goes in there and you just slide it back in place. Now at this point, want to go ahead and pull the floor covering out. So we can pull that small piece of carpet out. We'll set it aside for now. Underneath the carpet, if we look at the side panel here, we're going to have a few push pins on the floorboard of the car and then at the back threshold or right next to where the threshold was we'll have another push pin. We need to pull all three of these out so we can loosen this panel on the interior here. Now you can use a flat blade screwdriver or a trim panel tool. Just want to come underneath the push pin and pry up.Once you have the push pins loose, just kind of want to grab the panel so we can get access back here. And we're going to do the same thing on the other side as well. So we've got the panels loose on both sides and they actually just use this strap to hold the panel back. So I have access and so you can see inside there. Now inside that pocket, we're going to find our taillight connector. It's going to look pretty similar to the one that's on our wiring harness, but there's a little tab on there. We're going to press that tab, squeeze it so that we can disconnect the two connectors.Let me grab our wiring harness. And we're going to be working with the side that has the yellow and brown T-connector on it. Now you can see our T-connector's going to have a double-sided connector. One side it's going to connect into the taillight end and one side is going to plug into the harness that way it's in line. Before we connect everything, though, I do like to put a little bit of dielectric grease on both ends of the connector and that'll hopefully just cut down on any corrosion and moisture building up inside. So we can grab our connectors, make sure they lock in together, not a bad idea to give it a quick tug, make sure it is locked in place. Now also on the driver's side, we're going to have this white wire with a ring terminal. This is going to be our ground wire. We need to find a nice flat spot on the sheet metal that we can attach it to with the included self-tapping screw. Now, inside this pocket here, we have this nice ledge. It's actually pretty thick metal. So, that would be a really good spot to put our ground but obviously you're not going to be able to see a whole lot because once I get my drill in here to put the screw in my hands, going to be covering everything. So I'm just going to take my quarter inch bit with my self-tapping screw. Get the hole started first and then put it through the ring inaudible 00:05:20.So we did actually move the ground to the flat spot on the bottom of the trunk in that pocket because I couldn't actually get my drill in there straight but whenever you're putting your screw in, you just want to make sure that you don't strip it out and that the ring terminal is nice and tight. Now over on the driver's side still the last thing we're going to need to do is to mount the converter box. Now I'm going to use the double-sided foam tape they provided in the kit to remove one side of the backing. We'll stick it directly to the converter box. inaudible 00:05:56 push down, make it stick good. We remove the backing again of the other side. And then we just want to find a nice flat spot in that pocket so that it's not going to interfere with the panel going back in place. So I'm just going to take mine and I'm actually going to tape it to the bottom of this panel. So watch your wires make sure that green wire and the other ones don't get stuck underneath. So now I'm just going to run my green wire and the T-connector over to the passenger side or wrong it along the threshold so it'll cover it up once I put it back in place. You just want to make sure you have your four pole sticking out of this side panel somewhere in the middle but the T-connector is going to hook up exactly the same way as it did over here. And now we can just go ahead and put all those panels back in place, put all push pins back and put the threshold back. Now the final step of our installation, go ahead and throw that dust cover on your floor-pole, but then we need to make sure that all the wiring and circuits are working properly. So I'm going to have an extra set of hands go ahead and run through the lights for me and I'm going to use my four pole tester here to verify that they're all working. Turn the headlights on, please. We can see that circuit's working, the left turn signal. We can see that circuit's working the right turn signal, and finally the brakes. So all the lights are working, we're ready to hook it up to our trailer and hit the road and that'll finish up your look at the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness on a 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage.

This harness made my wiring for the trailer so easy. I was pleasantly surprised that etrailer had a hitch AND this harness for a Mitsubishi Mirage.
You KNOW I'll be dealing with etrailer again!

everything is hooked up correctly, trailer has good clean ground, but sometimes with japanese led vehicle lights the trailer lights dont have enough power to run properly, may need extra resistors!

LED lights draw less power than incandescent trailer lights so you may experience some trouble with hyper flashing or intermittent blinking when using the 4-pole flat with the LED trailer lights. This can be fixed with load resistors part # DI34ZR which draw more power so the wiring harness recognizes the trailer lights.

The harness was perfect. It took all of 5 minutes to install with basic tools. It fit my 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage DE 5 Speed perfectly. I had to drill a small hole for the ground as the instructions told me. No big deal. A really nice kit!
